As we reported this morning, things are looking a little precarious peering into EA’s giant Scrooge McDuck-esque money vault, with the publishing juggernaut losing $322 million last calendar year. There is a silver lining in their financial downturn, however, but only if your name is Sony.

EA software on the PS3 was up 19% last year, while sales on Microsoft’s platform fell 18%. The result has Sony and Microsoft now roughly level-pegging ($282m and $285m, respectively) in terms of EA sales spread.

EA have been strong proponents of the PS3 of late, with the publisher choosing to showcase new titles at last year’s E3 on Sony’s platform rather than its closest rival’s. With their latest figures suggesting the two platforms are now on par sales-wise, expect that relationship to continue.

  1. Blimey. Dead Space 2 should help those finances, all anyone has been talking about. Plus The Old Republic is launching this year, will be interesting to see the revenue it generates.

    • Mass Effect 2 should also improve Sony’s figure for this year as that will already be included in the figure for Microsoft.

  2. Do we know what constitutes the loss? Is it an operating loss or through acquisitions?

Good news about the level pegging though on the console spread though.

  4. Considering there are quite a few more 360′s out there Sony should be pretty pleased.

  5. Just bought Dead Space 2, Dragon Age 2 is on preorder and Mass Effect is top of my “buy when I have the spare cash/time” list. Definetly liking some of the EA franchises at the moment.

  6. I can see Sony rising even more with the impressive games this year [Mass Effect and Dead Space already!]

  7. Considering the XBOX360 has a one year head start on the PS3, not too bad. This time next year the PS3 could be ahead…
