Sunshine Insurance Group Corporation and game operator/manufacturer Gamebar have partnered together to launch a brand new virtual property insurance. Available to over 300 million online gamers in China, the insurance covers players for the loss of any goods, land, or other intangible gaming goodies, including currency. Thousands of complaints and arguments are handled every year between video game operators and those who subscribe to their services regarding lost virtual assets; something which Gamebar and Sunshine hope to tackle. Whether or not this will actually catch on is hard to tell, though there are bound to be a minority of devout gamers who have leaped on the opportunity to safeguard their online grotto of virtual treasures.

I don’t get it. How exactly is this supposed to work?

From the source, it’s pretty vague to determine exactly what is covered and there is no given price either. I expect that the insurance is paid per game i association with Sunshine. That way, if any items are lost, they are then recovered.

I know you can buy insurance in Eve online but this sounds competely bonkers. virtual items are generally purchase once, download as many times as you need so if it’s deleted can’t you just download it again?… unless the game/service you bought it under has been shut down… ?

I wonder if they offer Trophy-insurance?
