The first day of EVO was absolutely insane. We’re barely at the halfway point of the tournament and we’ve already seen so many top players eliminated. The two major tournaments yesterday were for Mortal Kombat and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. Today, everyone is playing Marvel vs. Capcom 3, BlazBlue: CS, and Tekken 6.
You can watch Day 2 from any of the links below. Stream 1 is considered the main stream and that one will be showing nothing but Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Stream 2 seems to be primarily centered around Tekken 6 right now but it might change to BlazBlue: CS as the day moves on.
EVO 2011 is also being live streamed directly from PlayStation Home. You’ll receive an exclusive prize each day you visit the theater. Today’s prize is a Fight Stick… on wheels. Your trusty new companion will follow you everywhere you go. I wish my Hit Box would do that so I didn’t have to carry it in a bag ever again. To activate the arcade stick, press Start, select Options, and go to My Inventory under the Personal menu.
The stream itself is still a mess. It becomes unwatchable just after a few moments. Sony says that they are still testing the technology, but that’s not really a good excuse. Their fix to reset the stream is the click the “Link” button to open the web browser and then exit out. The problem is that it takes forever for the browser to open up because it practically freezes the screen. It’s faster to just reload the theater itself by exiting and reentering. There is no way anyone can watch a match through PlayStation Home at its current state.
Tournament Recap
On Friday, Daigo “The Best” Umehara dominated most of his matches pretty easily. One of the highlights of EVO so far was easily when he crossed paths with his longtime rival, Alex Valle. It was Yun (Daigo) versus Ryu (Valle) and they were both at the top of their game. It came down to the last round with both players each having one win over the other. Daigo ended up taking the win but it was really an incredible set of matches. You can learn a few things by just watching these two going at it.
JuiceboxAbel had a few memorable matches of his own and managed to snag 9th place before being eliminated by Tokido, a top Akuma player from Japan. Justin Wong didn’t make it to the top 8 either and was eliminated by a Fei Long player in what seemed like an absolute upset. Wong just didn’t seem like himself and couldn’t find a way to defeat his opponent.
Here are the players that made it to the top 8 in SSFIV. These players will return to battle on Sunday.
Winners bracket
- Daigo Umehara (Yun)
- Fuudo (Fei Long)
- Latif (C. Viper)
- Poongko (Seth)
Losers bracket
- Flash Metroid (Zangief, C. Viper)
- WolfKrone (C. Viper)
- Tokido (Akuma)
- Kindevu (Yun)
On the Mortal Kombat front there were many upsets. The fan favorite going into this tournament was Michaelangelo. He has been winning every major tournament in the last few months and it seemed like him being in the grand finals would be a given. He was put into the losers bracket by Chris G and was ultimately eliminated by Online Tony in a Kabal mirror match. It’s crazy to think that he won’t even be in the top 8.
The two best Kitana players in the world were also put against each other and they had quite an epic match. It was Konqrr versus Osu16bit and it came down to the wire. If any player made a single mistake it would cost them nearly half their life. Osu16bit managed to snag the victory after some very close matches.
I met Osu a few months back at a tournament in Chicago. He has definitely improved since then. We crossed paths a few weeks ago at the Galloping Ghost Arcade and he put me into the losers bracket. I ended up getting fifth place overall while he managed to take the entire tournament. He’s a force to be reckoned with and my pick to win EVO 2011.
Here’s the Mortal Kombat top 8. It’s worth noting that each person is using a different character.

I don’t really understand the winners and losers bracket? Do the people in the losers bracket still have a chance of winning the tournament?
Delriach
Yup. The tournament rules are double elimination. You have a second chance to win the tourney but you have to do double the work basically.
so for the grand finals, the person in the losers bracket will have to beat the person in the winners bracket in two different sets in a best out of 5 situation. The first set is to knock the winner into the losers bracket and then the next set is to actually win the tourney. So yeah, everyone has two chances.
