PS Vita Can Be Used As A PS3 Controller

Sony have confirmed what we suspected all along, that you can use the PS Vita as a PlayStation 3 controller, effectively offering up similar gameplay possibilities as Nintendo’s Wii U is touting.

“What could you do with all of this?” asked SCEE’s Phil Rogers at the Develop Conference. “Here’s a few boring technical ideas: you could drive a display from a PS3 game, for example.  PS3 can send data down to Vita and Vita can display it. You could use the unique features [of Vita] – gyroscope, touch front and back – as a control device for a PS3 game.”

“You can run software on both devices and use the network to sync the game states. And that’s pretty good, because you then have the processing power of PS3 doing that work, Vita [doing] fancy graphics – however you want to do it. You’re not sacrificing the PS3’s CPU to be able to have a rich experience on Vita.”

It seems that Sony will be happy enough for developers to do this, too, which could bring about some interesting ideas.  Touch screen control for PS3 games, for example.

  1. Sounds like Remote Play, well done Sony!

    • It sounds like what remote play should have been don’t you mean

      • Yes, sorry, thats exactly what I meant :)

    • Unlike the PSP, the Vita has more control options that the PS3, offering unique gameplay. So this could be a big success. They’ll need a PS Vita and PS3 bundle though.

  2. So the Wii-U is already redundant and its still a year away from release. Great one Nintendo.

  3. And Nintendo’s stock plummets another 21%.

  4. Wasn’t there talk of the PSP being used in a similar way?
Like a rear view for the first F1 game on PS3.

    • Yes, but the PSP had really basic tech and didn’t support high-speed wifi. This is baked in from the beginning so, unlike the PS3/PSP interconnectivity features that never really kicked off, we should see a lot more from this manifestation.

Sony are also really pushing their services rather than their products so it makes sense to put a lot of emphasis on having the two interact with one another.

    • Yup, and I beleive that this is all lip service just like it was back then. You will be able to use it as a controller, and thats it I think.

How about some cross game chat Sony.

      • I’m pretty sure that had it working on PSV so I’m guessing that when the PSV comes out it’ll come with it the almighty cross game chat. I will then purchase my first headset :)

  5. I’d be more interested in the idea of the possibility of using a PS3 pad with the Vita… I hated the analogue stick on the PSP, playing for any length of time gave me horrible hand cramps. Although I’m unaware (as many people are) of the standards of the Vita’s analogue sticks. But I’d like the option of using a control pad.

    • Why would people carry a PS3 pad around?

Not to mention a docking stand for the Vita so the screen faces you, a PS3 pad doesn’t have touch pads or a touch screen.

PS3 pad wont be ideal for the Vita.

      • It would be ideal for the comfort of my hands.
I’d mainly play the Vita at home or at work so a docking station and a pad wouldnt be a stretch. But hey, that’s just me.
If the options there. Doesn’t mean everyone has to use it.
        I would.

      • The Sega Nomad (quite unknown portable Megadrive) had the possibility to use a Megadrive controller. You could play with two players on one portable device. My friend had one and it was great playing Streets of Rage with two on one portable (It had a pretty big screen).

I’d love it for the Vita.

  6. Well you could sink a Sixaxis/DS3 to the PSPGo so they might have kept that for Vita.

  7. Nintendo Wii U is already looking bad. Wii U won’t get the hardcore games but the same Mario stuff.

  8. Poor Nintendo.
The Wii U is not even released yet, and it’s already outdated.

  9. This is great news, but will developers make use of it?
I’d like to see it put to use in a really good RPG.

  10. And Naughty Dog have also said that the Vita should be able to do everything the Wii U can do. Only thing is, development in that area will depend on people buying both ps3 and Vita, as opposed to developing for the Wii U which one purchase.
