Sony Brings Exclusives And PS2 Games To PSN

Starting this week, Sony will be pushing exclusive games and gaming content as part of a brand new ‘Only On PlayStation Network’ program the company is rolling out, according to IndustryGamers.

[drop2]The games will include high profile stuff like inFamous: Festival of Blood as well as Pub Fund indie games like Eufloria and Okabu.  Regular PSN developers like PixelJunk (with Sidescroller) will also bolster the line-up.

“‘Only On PlayStation Network’ is our line of great exclusive games that users can count on to deliver exciting game experiences that can’t be found anywhere else,” said Susan Panico, senior director of PlayStation Network, SCEA.

Cleverly, Sony will also be pushing PS2 titles onto the PSN, like the esoteric God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo, Odin Sphere and Ring of Red.  Other incentives abound, like discounts for Plus subscribers and credit back when you spend certain amounts.

Although locked down for the US at the moment, we’d be disappointed not to hear something similar from SCEE soon, although most of the ideas do already match up with the European Play scheme.

The program kicks off withj Eufloria and Rochard this week, Sideway: New York next week, Okabu and Rocketbirds the week after and the vampire filled inFamous on the 25th, alongside Sidescroller.

  1. Wait. What? PS2 titles? How?

    • I’d like to know that as well…

      • Probably just modded with a PS3 boot up, like God Of War collection etc – only without the HD..?

        Good stuff though!

      • So what if someone already has a copy of the game that’s being offered on the PSN? Can they just let’s say, put it in the drive to confirm they actually have it and then download a version from PSN? Or will they have to buy it again? If the latter then I have to ask the question “why, is the process of releasing “HD” versions taking too long?”

    • I thought exactly this re. already owning the original PS2 disc. However, there would be a mass of illegal downloads. Pass around that PS2 classic when you’re done would you? :) Unless of course they can uniquely determine each individual copy and one’s it’s been checked, that PSN ID can download it up to 5 times.

  2. But they said that the PS3 lacked the chip that is needed to run PS2 games both physical and digital copies. O_O Anyway, i hope SCEE does give us some PS2(which i bet will be 3 years behind SCEA ;) It would be excellent if they release MGS2 &3 on the store when MGS hd comes out. :)

    • Only launch model PS3s can play PS2 games and theryre aren’t that many about.

      Uhm. Confused.

      • Some of the 80gb US models were able to emulate some ps2 titles, it’ll most likely be the same for our ps3’s :)

      • Excellent have my ps3 since launch.

    • Well my launch 60 is still going strong…its the trophies i’m after if they do any re-coding. But I doubt it will happen that way.

      • It’s about time you changed the thermal paste!

    • likely emulated…

      • already getting MGS 2 and 3 with my metal gear solid hd special edition :D

      • ment to reply to lone Steve :p

      • :(

      • I’ll reply to you Sympozium; Yes, emulation is most likely, and hopefully the emulation will allow HD-resolutions and Anti-aliasing. Something most PC emulators can pull off. The PS1 emulation has this to a certain extent, but could be much improved trough texture filtering and better AA.

      • I would actually buy both MGS HD and the PS2 versions. What? I love MGS and if Konami have messed up MGS 2&3, i’ll have something to fall back and have my memories of MGS3 not ruined. :D Metal Gear Solid 2 &3 still look good to this very day.

      • Why would they release MGS for PS2 classics…. after making MGS HD?

  3. It would be great to see PS2 titles like XIII on PS3…especially seeing as this had online capability on PS2, but was pretty useless back then!

  4. Its nice how its the more less famous.. (eh..) titles, Always wanted to try God Hand

  5. Is this what the weird trailer last week (I think) was about?
You know, the one you (or one of you other writers) said Kevin Butler tweeted?

  6. “Sony will also be pushing PS2 titles onto the PSN, like the esoteric God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo, Odin Sphere and Ring of Red”
I have never heard of any of them? :D And i am a BIG PS2 fan.

    I want –
    TimeSplitters 1,2+3,
    SSX(all of them),
    R&C(all of them),
    GT3+4,
    The Getaway 1+2,
    Ape Escape 2+3 etc etc…

    THOSE ARE THE ‘PS2’ GAMES I WANT SONY!:P Or bring back PS2 playback to a PS3? ? ? :-(

    • Yes but those are more common?… like I said many haven’t heard of the likes of Maximo, God Head and the others I guess where late in PS2s life and I’m sure my libary would be even more obscure….

Helloooo Dark Cloud? Soul Reaver 2? I want… even though I already have them..

      • GodHand and Maximo are really early PS2 games. I think they were released in the first year of console’s life.

  7. Didn’t Geohot already confirm that the PS3 was capable of running PS2 games (without the actual PS2 chip) when he hacked it?
Anyways, what a dick move on Sony’s side to deny any PS2 compatibility whatsoever and now it is possible? Bunch of greedy liars…

  8. Sideway: New York looks like a cool game, hopefully it comes with a trial. With the right emulation, these PS2 games could rival the HD-re-releases. But I’m not holding my breath.

  9. ps2 games on ps3 :)
but only if you rebuy them.o_O
    :(

i’ve got a copy of god hand to hand, pardon the pun.
literally, i can reach out from where i’m sitting and pick it up.
but the only way i could play it on ps3 is by rebuying it?

    i’ll pass thanks.

it wouldn’t have been so bad if europe ever actually got a properly backwards compatible ps3 like the rest of the world did.

no, they made that pitiful excuse about lack of parts so they could redesign the motherboard to remove the emotion engine or whichever one it was they took out.
then proved that the shortage was a lie was by flooding the market.

how do you go from a severe shortage, to flooding the market?

before you say anything, yes, i am still bitter about that.
