Last week, a video posted on YouTube seemed to show a problem with Skyrim on the Xbox 360. It appears that when the game is installed to the hard drive some users have reported that the high resolution textures were not loading.
Bethesda has now acknowledged that there is a problem and posted the following message on the official Skyrim forums:
Skyrim uses a lot of dynamic streaming systems, including textures. We’ve seen a few reports of certain textures temporarily scaling down on the Xbox 360, and not scaling back up. We have verified that this issue does not occur when playing off the disk and when the game is fully cached (not installed).
Skyrim makes heavy use of the Xbox 360 caching system, and caches over the normal course of play while in menus or interiors. This cache can be wiped when other games are played or when the user manually removes it. We’re working on a solution in the next title update for those who have installed the game.
The simple fix is to not install the game until after the update.

This hopefully means that all/most of the bugs found will have patches, unlike some other bethesda games…

Quick someone do a PS3/Xbox video comparison armed with this knowledge. We can forever claim the PS3 version is better than the Xbox version.
You might think that’s pathetic, but that’s exactly what happened with the PS3 Orange Box video comparison faked review that most people believe is 100% true… (they deliberately kicked off a Quicksave on the PS3 and didn’t on the Xbox in the side-by-side).

This PS3-bashing is pretty standard. Hell Digital Foundry and Lens of truth are no better, they will selectively cherry-pick areas of a game that suit their predetermined outcome. Anyone that thinks anyone is impartial on these game review sites is frankly an idiot, they are mouthpieces for the higher bidder (advertiser).

I never did understand what cache was in computer speak. Anyone care to explain in idiot-proof languange?

The easiest way to look at it is an area for temporary data storage so it can be referred to quicker.

Its an area of your hard drive where the most common used, er, ‘things’ are kept. For example, if you have Google as your home page in Firefox, the browser will cache the Google logo image, so every time you visit that page it loads the picture off the hard drive rather than the internet, thus speeding up the page.
The 360 cache would work in the same way, caching graphics, sounds etc.

Well explained.

In the example of the Internet, it always saves on bandwidth :-)
tonycawley
Thank you, that was extremely helpful, so much like a cache in the real world then :-)

Remember games before updates? Sigh.

Yes. We had POKE patches. JSW, anyone?
Kaminari
Nah. I debugged games myself. Speccy forever.

I’d hate to play a Bethesda game without the ability for them to patch it! While they are great games, there’s often plenty wrong with them even after all the updates etc.

I hope this doesn’t mean that QA never actually tested something as mundane as playing the game when the content was installed on the console…

Don’t think i’ve noticed any problems other than the odd frame rate issue, but I’ll uninstall it to be sure.

Same here,i actually expected it to be alot shakier than it is,fked if i’m uninstalling though.

If I delete my the game info from my 360 (I installed the game) would I lose my save game too?
Armonster9000
Never mind, I just watched the video
