Sony Registers “From Ashes” Trademark

Searching the US trademark database for the phrase “From Ashes” turns up something interesting. Despite being the name of some Mass Effect 3 DLC released just weeks ago, it appears that Sony has nabbed the trademark itself.

The entry is in relation to “computer game software and video game software” but otherwise offers no clues as to what it could be, aside from the fact that it was registered by Sony Computer Entertainment America, in California.

So, did Sony jump on this trademark while BioWare’s DLC was imminent in order to reserve it ahead of a big reveal – perhaps something for E3? That could explain the recent friction between BioWare and Sony. Is this something to do with the speculation surrounding something in the God of War franchise for next Thursday? It certainly sounds like a suitable subtitle for a God of War game.

Santa Monica Studios are definitely working on something that hasn’t been announced yet, although that’s likely to be God of War related should those rumours bear fruit, and Sucker Punch Productions (inFamous) has been quiet since the PSN release of Festival of Blood. It’s also worth remembering that Guerrilla Games has some new IP which has yet to be named, in addition to Killzone 4.

Expect Sony to tell us that they don’t comment on rumour and speculation while we try to dig up more information.

  1. Sucker Punch please. That is all.

    • Infamous 3 – Now follows on from Festival of Blood, where Cole forgot about his ‘situation’ & went out in sunlight. Is then brought back ‘From Ashes’ by a necromancer who wants to use Cole’s powers to… Well who cares really?

This stuff just writes itself really! :)

  2. GOD OF WAR 4!!!!!!!! :P

  3. Cricket.

  4. Must be God of War. I’m ready for another one now, thanks :)

  5. What if it was Medievil: From Ashes?

Get it? the Brave Sir Dan awakens from teh ashes of London as now its a battlefield of nuclear war,, uncomfortably some nutter got his hands on Zaroks spellbook and now the undead yet again roam the earth.

Dan soon found manuscripts from the ol London Sony HQ and discovered a shocking discovery. He looked at a tableture (an Ipad 8) and said “God of War: From Ashes his final words; Damn you Sony why continue that stupid series than give me a well deserved sequel GAaaaaaaaH!!! even G- Police got a sequel.. as it said on the iPad 8.

Sir Dan gave up hope and so went back to that blue mummy chick in the tomb, pssh like anyone would go there.

    • I would love a Medievil sequel. Didn’t get to play 2 and Resurrection for the PSP was somehow a stripped down and beefed up remake of one all at the same time.

  6. What about a Quantic Dream game? Less plausible than GOW but still perhaps…
Or maybe it’s just Start the Party: From ashes

  7. Cross-Game Chat!

  8. That could easily have to do with GOW.

SPOILERS FOR A 3 YEAR OLD GAME!!

At the end of the credits in 3 after Kratos has killed himself, blood is smeared all over the emblem of a Phoenix indicating that Kratos crawled away. And we know that phoenixes rise from their ashes and are reborn, so this could be that…maybe? (end speculative fanboy conjecture).

    • We also know the relevance of ashes to Kratos’ family

  9. Well clearly Sony has let slip the title of their new David Bowie space dancing simulator.
