United Front Games are advertising a new position with the studio. PlayStation fans will know them from their two kart racers, Modnation Racers and LittleBigPlanet Karting but it’s also definitely worth noting that they’re responsible for the excellent open world crime caper, Sleeping Dogs.
The new role, posted on their website, is for a Network / Multiplayer Programmer to work on a “next gen console title,” listing responsibilities that are very much focussed towards what you might expect any modern multiplayer game to feature. Leader boards, matchmaking, bandwidth optimisation and online lobbies are all mentioned.
It’s pure speculation just now but the timing would seem ripe for a sequel to Sleeping Dogs. Square Enix has previously stated that it considers the open world, kung fu drama to be among its leading properties for the future. A Modnation Racers sequel would seem superfluous in the wake of LittleBigPlanet Karting and although a sequel to Sackboy’s racer might be a logical early release title for Sony’s next gen console, it seems a little too soon to be working on a sequel to a game that hasn’t exactly broken records at retail.
Of course, there’s always the hope that United Front could be working on something completely new and unannounced, but hopefully it’s alongside a nice stable development environment for Sleeping Dogs 2.
United Front is also on the look out for some people to fill other positions. Among them are animators, listing understanding of “stylized and exaggerated” movement as a key skill. The listing for Physics Engineer notes a need to understand character and vehicle physics. There are various other programming and art roles listed, all of which hint at a studio gearing up for a bright future.
