Mark Cerny Says PS4 Launch Line-Up The Company’s Strongest Yet

Mark Cerny is Sony’s new Good Guy. Wheeling him out in New York was a pleasant surprise, and he’s been refreshingly open about his work on the PS4’s hardware ever since.

In a new, frank Gamasutra Cerny talks GPUs – “it’s ATI Radeon” but “getting into specific numbers probably doesn’t help clarify the situation much”, that 8GB of RAM, longevity – “the timeframe in which people will use these features fully is 2015? 2017?” and the launch line-up.

Well, in passing. “The launch lineup for PlayStation 4 – though I unfortunately can’t give the title count – is going to be stronger than any prior PlayStation hardware,” he said. “And that’s a result of that [tech] familiarity.”

Cerny also said it takes “weeks, not months” to port a game engine from the PC to the PlayStation 4.

Sony haven’t yet talked about a release window for PS4 beyond an initial, vague “holiday 2013” assumed by some to only refer to a US launch period. The presence of GT6 for PS3 hints that here in Europe we might be waiting until 2014.

  1. So we can expect more than the 29 Vita games then. Much better than the PS3s 12!

    • Not in terms of numbers. I assumed he meant quality.

      • Well, he did say he can’t say the exact number count but asures us it’s Sony’s strongest line up to date. This leads me to believe that he did infact mean quantity, not quality. His comment about easy PC ports also points to this.

  2. I’ll be happy if it’s got a better browser than this pile of dogtod, let alone anything else:p

  3. Well there’s a shock! He was hardly going to say ‘hey guys, the launch window line up for the PS4 is better than the playstation 1 but slightly weaker than PS2’ is he now? Fingers crossed it’s decent though. Will be intrigued to see what Microsoft have to offer in a few weeks!

    • True, but it’s reassuring to read nonetheless. :-)

  4. Next gen Ridge Racer please

  5. Hopefully Sony will ‘release’ the PS4’s release date at E3, although my crystal ball’s been telling me for weeks that we in the EU will be playing PS4 at Christmas 2013.

  6. How does the fact that the PS3 is getting GT6 mean that PS4 will not be released in europe until next. I fail to see the link, GT6 will be available in all areas so why only europe.

I can easily see PS4 not being available in Europe until 2014 as we alway get Sony hardware last, as has been the case with every console ever released by them, so quite why you think it will be down to GT6 is baffling?

    • I assume that Alex meant that Polyphony would be daft to release GT6 at around about the same time that PS4 was released. Where as PS4 buyers would be most likely concentrating on ‘next gen’ games as opposed to ‘last gen’.
Although I could be totally wrong and my post was essentially talking bollocks.

      • Given their track record with GT5 i cant seeing it getting released this year.

  7. “Weeks not months to port from pc to ps4”,now i like the sound of that. Also it’ll be good to see how big of a part the Vita has in being intergrated with the ps4.

  8. I can’t see why GT6 means Europe will get PS4 next year. Sony has the intention of releasing this year in the EU, and all though that could change, it is in their best interest to release this year, and they know it.

    • “Sony has the intention of releasing this year in the EU”

Sony haven’t said any such thing.

      • I read an interview from a top Sony bloke, can’t remember who, but when asked if the holiday 13 meant Europe too he answered yes we plan to include Europe but cannot say where it will be launched yet.
So there’s hope for us here, well just a little bit.

      • Oops, my apologies then.

  9. Everyone said the same about Vita before release, and look where it ended up. Vita’s line up wasn’t actually that good at all, and it’s first 6 months was even worse. The PS4 is going to need a solid launch platform and a good price if Sony wants people to buy it other than the early adopters.

  10. Please arrive before Xmas Ps4. I want you urgently. :D
