Back in the old days, before I did all of this stuff, I’m not exactly sure how news got out; it all seems to be via twitter these days. Specifically, Sony’s President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida’s twitter account, where he merrily replies to PS4 and Vita questions.
The latest of these asked whether buying a game using your smartphone would require the PS4 to be on in order to instantly download the game, which he replied to explaining that the PS4 will turn itself on:
@SyriasSerj When you buy a PS4 game on smartphone, it will wake your PS4 up to start downloading the game. PS4 goes back to sleep after that
— Shuhei Yoshida (@yosp) August 27, 2013
Neat. Sounds like PlayTV’s recording features mixed with the PS3 auto-off. It’s going to be great buying a game while I’m out, heading back home later on and having it ready to play, without worrying about my PS4 being on all day.

That’s a great feature. I like the background downloads as they are on PS3 but it’d be even better if I didn’t have to wait for my scheduled update time (3am) before they were installed.

Awesome! The PS4 gets better with every tweet from @yosp.

This guy is a legend his sense of humour is spot on and he seems to be skipping merrily along on all the positive press. Love it! :)
Starman
Saw a few stories about how he replies a lot so I asked him how many servers they’ll be adding to psn to support the ps4. Got no reply. Guess they’re not going for 300,000.
beeje13
Well that would cost hundreds of millions of Dollars for most of the time to be doing nothing. Unless they decide to bring all Sony services (company websites, Music unlimited etc) in one cluster. A big operation for sure but might be more efficient and less fragmented.
It would be easier (and cheaper in the short run) to just use: https://cloud.google.com/products/compute-engine
Sony are on good terms with Google aswell.
yiddo
You’ve fell for Microsofts PR web spinning it seems.
Why would they need these servers? Because Microsoft say they have them? And what does that REALLY bring in the long run?
Nearly all Sony first party games have dedicated servers already, as do some third party games such as Battlefield. Plus, they still have Gaikai to bring in yet.
I’m still yet to see what these 300,00 servers do to be honest.
yiddo
Make that 300,000*.
Starman
Do fuck off replying to me with your patronising comments.
yiddo
Is that the response you start to hand out when you get found out for being an MS shill?
In all seriousness, if you’re going to comment on things with such an agenda (don’t try to deny it) then at least maybe try to get some facts right first. I just don’t like it when people don’t know all of the information, it annoys me.
Starman
Source please to back up your claim that the 300,000 are “shill” as you put it?
Starman
And if you really don’t know what the servers are for then your knowledge of gaming in general is sorely lacking.
yiddo
No. I’m saying you are a corporate shill. It was originally a joke but I’m starting to doubt it.
Regardless, none of my original points have been addressed. I was just trying to have a good discussion about the pros and cons of each console, is all.
yiddo
Oh, so I’m supposed to believe MS are using these servers for ‘Unprecedented content experiences’ and when they say buzzwords like ‘the cloud increases the power of the Xbox One, adding more AI’ and shit like that. But thus far, they have not shown ONE BIT how the cloud enhances any games. I’d love to see how it does.
Also don’t try and mention dedicated servers, I also covered that bit earlier. Sony has their own, have had them for the whole of last gen (where as MS didn’t). So, go on. Prove me wrong.
Starman
Basically you don’t like that I pointed out something that your precious Sony won’t be able to match or better, so instead you try to claim they’re lies and offer some things on defence of Sony. Starting to sound like a fanboy there yiddo. Done here now and cannot be bothered arguing with you anymore.
yiddo
You’ve been exposed.
I raised valid points in my initial post and your way to dispute against them was to tell me to ‘fuck off’.
Nice to see I was having a discussion with an intelligent person….
Let this be a lesson well learnt. Don’t step in with the big boys unless you can be sure to back yourself up ;) bye.

FIGHT!!!!!! lol
HunterGatherer
Sony use Akamai for content mirroring, it’s why if you have a un-throttled internet connection, PSN is blisteringly fast, as it’s all locally mirrored content.
On the other hand, if you cheapskate and pay for cheap and nasty Sky/Virgin, they will claim to be fast but throttle everything back to barely usable.
Starman
That’s the first time I’ve ever seen psn described as blisteringly fast!
HunterGatherer
Then you need to get a new ISP.
As for 300,000 Xbox servers, sounds like you have been totally brainwashed by the hypetrain.
More servers doesn’t mean a better service, it could also be a very inefficient service that NEEDS lots of servers.
Starman
Ha ha, you crack me up!
damoxuk
Well I would imagine it would need to be “on” whether that’s standby or not :)
If it’s switched off at the socket then clearly not hehe unless it operates via wireless electricity? :D
double-o-dave
I heard it still works if it’s ‘off’ at the socket… Sony send a Playstation Pixie round your house to plug it in. I’m gonna set a trap for one at my house then train him to kill all the annoying cats on my street which keep trying to split open my rubbish bags!
bigchrissyc
Thats pretty impressive. Nothing worse that waiting for a download and for it too install.
seedaripper1973
Please sony release PlayTv 2 for PS4 and please make sure its HD compatable (there are free to view HD channels you know, lord knows why they didn’t do it with the PS3?, i use mine all the time as a DVR.
yiddo
They’re bringing their own IPTV service to the PS4 soon. Will be the first of its kind.
TSBonyman
That will be a very handy feature as i’m getting used to just using the web store these days.
khaliel
Actually, PS3 is already doing it IF you are a PS+ member. I often use the SEN website (much faster than the PS Store on the PS3…). After buying a game, on the final screen after the payment, I simply click on “Add to the download list” and my PS3 turns on to download it, then turns off again. This is a PS+ only feature on PS3 (and probably on PS4 too, he wasn’t clear on that, but as PS+ is almost needed on PS4, it seems logical).
TSBonyman
That’s odd, my PS3 doesn’t switch on when i add stuff to my download list – it prompts me that there is stuff waiting to download when i switch on my ps3. Do i need to enable the ‘pushed content’ setting for plus?
ron_mcphatty
I dunno about plus but there is a way for the PS3 to be always on to enable remote play from a PSP to turn the beast on. I found it left the PS3 in some sort of limbo half on state, like a Sky box, with the fan whirring occasionally. Didn’t like it, turned it off, but if you’re interested dude maybe have a look at the remote play menus for clues.
TSBonyman
Ah yes ron_mcphatty, i’m aware of that cheers. I don’t know if that is how it’s done but i also never felt comfortable leaving my PS3 in RP state.
We can only hope that the op returns to enlighten us!
