GameStop Announce 2.3 Million Customers Waiting For PS4s Globally

Gamestop has announced that it has sold out of the company’s current stock allocation of the PS4, and 2.3 million people are waiting globally for the console to be available from the company. The story originally came from Bloomberg, and I contacted Cliff Edwards, the author of the article, for some clarification on the figures.

He replied with the following quote from Tony Bartel, GameStop’s boss, and confirmed the 2.3 million figure related to global demand.

“In addition to selling through all of our reservations and some additional allocation that we have received from Sony, we still have over 2.3 million customers on the First to Know List, which indicates continued demand for months to come.”

This figure then is not pre-orders but customers who have signed up to an e-mail list to know when the console will be available from GameStop. That is from one retailer. It will be interesting to see how many more people are on waiting lists with other companies such as Amazon or Game.

  1. Just from Gamestop? that is crazy.

Is 10 million by end of 2014 out of the question?

    • That’s exactly what I thought!!

    • Oh btw just been looking at sales data and if there are 1 million PS4’s sold in EU next Friday then it will overtake the Wii U in Europe in 24 hours (VGChartz). data).

      • Amazon said yesterday that they are expecting the PS4 to be the fastest selling console in first 24 hours when launched next week. Overtaking the current record holder, PS4 – North America, and expected new record holder X1.

      • I saw a video the other day that said the PS4 could pass the Wii U sales come Christmas,as its supposedly only sold just over 3 million world wide

  2. *getting worried* (not having preordered)

    • I’m not, the payment for mine was taken on Monday so as long as the delivery driver doesn’t get lost, die en-route I should have it on launch day.

  3. Kinda misleading.
This is just people who have signed up to a notification service. I was gonna buy the wife a vivienne westwood bag for Xmas so I signed up for a notification service. By the time it came round I’d changed my mind and bought something else instead. Same diff.

    • Yeah it’s exactly the same, I’ve done that before, was going to buy a PS Vita, was out-of-stock so signed up to be notified of new stock, but by that time I’d chosen something else from the plethora of other handheld gaming consoles on offer :-\

  4. Bloody hell, that’s some demand. It’s not like Sony are choking them out either. Wow.

  5. I’d just like to take this opportunity to give gamestop some bad publicity if i may. I bought battlefield 4 on the ps4 through their trade in scheme. Not only did they charge me TWICE pushing me into my overdraft and incurring a bank fee but they have refused to refund my cash after I sent in my two games. Please avoid this company at all costs. Bunch of f&@&)n pirates.

  6. 4 the people!

  7. Us Europeans may by not be getting any of the “dodgy” PS4s manufactured in the“Hangfujin Yantai” factory in China. The batch coming to Europe is reportedly made in Japan.

    • O I thought only 4% of ps4’s are made in Japan?

  8. This “next gen” belongs to Sony. Period!
