PS4 Outsells Xbox One By 166,000 Units In UK At End Of 2013

Both Sony and Microsoft have had very strong launches for their respective consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One, in the UK since launching in November 2013. Now sales figures for the consoles going up to the end of the year give a clearer picture.

Sony’s PS4 shifted 530,000 units while Microsoft’s Xbox One was purchased 364,000 times. So in total 894,000 units of these machines now are part of people’s living rooms, bedrooms and offices. That’s an incredible install rate so soon after launch.

If you’re wondering what that meant financially then Sony’s sales were £181.1 million, while the One’s sales were worth £144.5 million.

  1. That 894k figure for the UK alone is incredible. Great news for the industry. I’d be interested in how that compares to 1. The number of homes in the UK. And 2. The figures for ps3/360.

    • It is incredible! It means that roughly 1% of the UK population bought a next gen console pretty much at launch. That’s probably more than ate the recommended five-a-day.

  2. Some massively impressive numbers in there. I remember it seemed to take ages for people i knew to switch from the PS2. I’d love to know which console, if any, people have upgraded from.

  3. Still refusing to buy one until my 360 backlog is finished! Borderlands 2 GoTY, Arkham City GoTY, Diablo3, and about 10 others. It’s going to be a while.

    • My PS3 backlog keeps adding because of the IGC! Irritating!

      • Log in to the store from a computer and “buy” the PS4 IGC games and you’ll have a backlog ready when you get a PS4 (unless you already have)

    • My backlog goes all the way back to the PS1 and this isn’t a joke! I still have Fear Effect 1+2, Parasite Eve and Vagrant Story to finish….I’ll see you all for the PS5 ;)

      • Vagrant story, that was a great game. Play it next!

  4. Now all we need is some software ;) hehe

That being said most of the games that are out are all pretty good, but it’ll be nicer in a few months when there are some more titles to choose from.

    • Amen to that. I decided to platinum AC4 because i have nothing better to play!

  5. Great news for Ps4 really. Although I own both Ps4 is by far faster loading FIFA I noticed last night anda lit more people online at the same time. Also less of a halo round the player on Ps4.

    • Faster loading..? Are you joking..? I still wait for my PS4 to arrive at all, it’ll never make up for this with loading times… ;o)

      • Lol so you’ve not got one yet? It was a late attempt anyway.
Still nothing really to say it’s major urgency yet really. Yes FIFA is good it’s not a console seller, Where Forza imho is. Hope you get one soon. ;-)

  6. Great numbers for the UK, will be interesting to see those for the rest of Europe.

    • Oh is not really out in your part of EU yet then. Sorry on above post. Also I do remember where your from, I’m surprised they’ve not soaked central your place yet. Maybe next few weeks..

      • No, it is out, I’ve just not seen any numbers yet. And given that on the Continent Sony always was in the lead over the Xbox, I’m interested how much that would be now with the new hardware.
That’s ok, I’ll catch up soon enough, wouldn’t even have had any time gaming over the holidays anyway. ;o)

      • In fairness even the UK has very few/ McCabe zero stock too.

      • McCabe lol * nearly

  7. Great news for Sony, wonder what the world-wide sales are.

    • Same here

    • Apparently the ps4 has sold 3.4 million units by 21st December. X1 has sold 2.5 million. Figures according to vgchartz. Good start for both systems, but hopefully ps4 will continue to grow its lead.

  8. That’s a great start for both of them, PS4 having the obvious lead but XB1 not doing too shabby either. The Japanese PS4 launch should be another boost but XB1 still has some regions left to launch in too.

  9. Wow…. that’s wonderful. Even more impressive considering the PS4 was a week later on launch.

  10. Good news for sony!
