Well, after a couple of months of close competition month-on-month, the PS4 has jumped ahead in sales in the US for January, “nearly doubling” that of its nearest competitor, the Xbox One, as stock becomes more readily available once again.
That means it might have sold between 250K-300K units this month, naturally down from November and pre-Christmas December, with the Xbox One selling an estimated 143K units.
Software sales are down by 26% year over year, with retail sales down 1% and around $232 million in total software sales. That’s quite a lot, but shows a definite lack of software for these new consoles.
In terms of games, Call of Duty: Ghosts was on top, closely followed by NBA 2K14, while Tomb Raider made its way back into the top ten after its re-release on PS4 and Xbox One. The PS4 version of Tomb Raider outsold the Xbox One version 2:1.

As for Nintendo, there isn’t much news on their hardware (nor PS3 and Xbox 360, for that matter) but they’re showing some impressive software figures, as Pokémon X & Y sold 125K in January to make 3.25 million in total sales. Super Mario 3D World and A Link Between Worlds have now sold 655K and 715K in total since release respectively. This puts 3DS software sales up 6% while Wii U sales were up 26%.

Looks like moving most early hardware to the US was a good move by Sony. And double in the US probably means about four times as much in Europe, depending on stock. Looking forward to see how the PS4 will be received in Japan later on, with no serious competitors there at all.
Voolar
Yeah, but the Xbox One sold quicker…

Just read MS might bring a Kinect-less XBone soon, reversing this wrong decision as well. That’ll bring the price down and even the odds.
lambchop
True, but with Sony’s better potential sales. They have more room to drop the PS4 price too.

Kinect is $75 dollars to make according to the isuppli teardown. By far the best way they could cut the price.
Maybe they couof replace it with the newly announced media remote? That’s got to cost only around $5 to make and they still give an option to control the box without the need for a gamepad.

I’m going to be getting my PS4 with my next phone contract as I can’t afford one otherwise. Unfortunately all their PS4 stock went straight away and they don’t know when they’re getting them back in, so every morning I check the website like a giddy school girl on Christmas morning, and every morning I’m disappointed.
If anyone else is due a phone upgrade and doesn’t have a PS4 yet it’s well worth checking Carphone Warehouse – I’m actually going to be paying less each month.

Yeah but you don’t walk out of the shop with the ps4, my brother tried something like this recently but not with ps4, I think it was a laptop. Basically you have to maintain payments for the first 3 months of your contract and if you never make a late payment you get the ps4, 4 months after you’ve got the phone. They try their best to find a way not to give it to you.

I don’t want to sound like I’m advertising for Carphone Warehouse but my other half got a laptop the other day and walked out of the shop with it and my mate got a XB1 which he got a couple of days later. I’ve looked into this A LOT and there are loads of companies out there that act like you’ve mentioned but in my experience Carphone Warehouse isn’t one of them.

Are this hardware figures US only or global? PS4 at 2:1 global is understandable but in it’s competitors own back yard? And this is with an arguably stronger launch lineup if games in the X1’s favour.

When you see NPD, I think it’s always US-based.
Interesting to read that both the Xbox One and PS4 overtook the 3DS for hardware sales too. Hugely impressive when comparing it to a handheld from Nintendo as they sell very, very well.

Careful Blair, you might be accused of anti-MS/XB1 and pro-Sony/PS4 bias by posting this entirely accurate and factual information …

Don’t think we should go there. This is impressive work by Sony so would be good to keep the topic ‘friendly’ :-)
Think the Kinnect less X1 is critical for MS to keep up – at least at the moment OR sell it at a loss. I would probably get an X1 with kinnect if they sold at PS4 price as the kids would love it, just not me.
bunimomike
Agreed. Something has to be done if they want to stay in reach of Sony’s figures. Sure, I cannot predict the future but if Sony maintain a 2:! ratio in most countries, that means the end of 2014 could see something like:
12 million PS4s sold
6 million XBox Ones sold
Which would smart a lot for Microsoft.
bunimomike
Nah… there’s still enough Nintendo love in there to balance things out. ;-)

Great to hear that the PS4 is selling so well, and that’s before it’s even been released in it’s home ground of Japan. “The future’s bright, the future’s Sony”.

PS4 is an awesome console and the marketing of Sony, it’s new feature, ps plus and line up speak volumes. No wonder it’s flying! Well played Sony… :-)))
