No Online Multiplayer For Xbox 360 & PS3 Versions Of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5

Activision has confirmed that the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 will not feature any online functions, including the multiplayer that will be present in the new generation editions. The online will allow players to send each other challenges as well as share custom skate parks. The last gen edition is also only going to be available at GAME in the UK.

While Activision hasn’t given a reason for online being kept out of PS3 & Xbox 360 copies the cynical side of me thinks it may be to force players to upgrade to the new generation, and pick up the slightly more expensive new gen copies that will be available at all game retailers. Should THPS5 then fail to make sales targets on last gen it could in theory allow the publisher to state that developing for PS3 & Xbox 360 is no longer viable. Activision could then join Ubisoft in all but ditching development for those consoles, bar one or two popular IPs.

Of course that last bit is all just pure speculation on my part.

  1. why even make a last gen version ? the screenshots made it look worse than a launch PS3 or 360 game.

  2. Being that I would be interested in the current gen offering, this doesn’t really affect me too much. Does seem rather strange that they haven’t given a reason for it though.

Seems to me that they have developed the game for current gen systems & then as an afterthought sought to cater for last gen too, with the simplest way to port the singleplayer by itself. Although, if the online portions (such as challenges etc) are that intrinsically linked throughout the game, you would think that it would probably have been more work for them to take that stuff out!
