Rocket League’s Season One ranking system was released last week, giving players a place in the leaderboard and different leagues. However, Psyonix has stated that there have been some errors that have come to light since the update went live, including how the ranks are working. Essentially what should happen is that players should earn points proportional to the rank of the opponent; the higher the rank difference the more points you earn.
The way the Season One system is working currently means players get few points in wins, but end up losing a lot if they lose a match.
When we reset the Preseason standings, we reset everyone’s MMR “uncertainty” to allow player skills to move around more freely with the new season. It turns out this was a mistake because it made matchmaking less accurate AND it caused problems with the RP algorithm that was supposed to “trend” you towards your MMR. Those two issues combined created a climate where players see small gains but significant losses when they shouldn’t have.
Another problem is that the league tiers encompass large groups, meaning the lower ranked players are far outclassed by the higher players in the tier. This has led to the ranks becoming less competitive, and the tables are stagnating. Psyonix has detailed what it will be doing to fix the problems, with them rolling out before Season Two gets into full swing.
- 1) We plan on implementing placement matches in the near future (most likely in Season 2)
- 2) We are restoring your hidden MMR Skills and Uncertainties to Preseason values, but with a minimum uncertainty (your skill never completely stagnates). This will improve matchmaking quality AND fix problems with your RP incorrectly “trending” towards your MMR. In other words, you’ll see fewer small RP gains and fewer large RP losses (We are doing this very SOON).
- 3) We are actively investigating re-seeding players into more accurate divisions. A 499 Preseason MMR player could instead be placed into Bronze III instead of Bronze I, for example. We will also be careful not to reduce anyone’s RP who has already climbed past where they would have been re-seeded (We are also doing this SOON).

I’ve got other problems like intermittently no sound (just in RL) and matchmaking seems to take an age since they allowed PC players to exclude PS4 players from their matchmaking.
Great, great game. Hopefully they can tune it as above and fix the niggles I’m experiencing.
And then, hopefully more varied stadium designs will become available via DLC
