I’ll quite happily say that Uncharted 2 had the best multiplayer in the series. It didn’t have any silly progression systems, no in-game ability store, no sidekicks, and you just had to learn the maps and be a bit better than your opponent! My enthusiasm for the series’ multiplayer waned since then, but Uncharted 4’s Classic Throwback DLC might just tempt me back in as it releases today.
Originally debuting in the beta playlist eight months ago, this update adds the Classic Mode as a permanent gametype, which means:
- No store (no sidekicks, mystical, heavy weapons to purchase)
- No marking (Boosters that allow marking will not function)
- No weapon mods or Hero Weapons
- No radar
- Grenades only
- Instant respawn
- Heavy Weapons spawn on the map
Sounds dreamy, right? Well alongside that there’s King of the Hill joining the Ranked playlist, which has its own twist on the classic gametype. Instead of simply fighting for a shifting control point, the first team to gain control of the point then has their ability to respawn removed and has to try and hold out for as long as possible without getting wiped out. It sounds really interesting.
Further to this, there are:
- Two new weapons – Carrigan 53 Long Gun and GX3-9 Long Gun
- 40 new character skins, including new sports-themed sets
- 21 new vanity items
- 13 new taunts
- 16 new weapon skins
- Three new Survival boosters
- New Ranked season rewards – the Ranked Masks set
- Challenges for new items
Ranked play has a new scoring system, with your performance grade determined by your total score – including objective, offense and support. There’s also 10 bonus ranked points earned every time you win with a margin of 100 or more in a blowout victory.
Last but not least, while this update is out now for all Uncharted 4 owners, the multiplayer will also be included with Uncharted: The Lost Legacy when it launches on August 22nd.

Goodie gum drops, I prefer the classic mode too – There’s nothing more annoying than repeatedly being strangled by those annoying sidekicks over and over again.
May jump on it again this week then. Not sure why it’s taken them so long to release this mode, or even why it needed a beta.
