Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda Not Sold On Microtransactions

At least not on console.

Microtransactions have been in the headlines a lot recently, like for example Battlefront II and even the headline above. Love them or loathe them microtransactions are a source of debate between players, developers, and publishers with lots of opinions given on the subject. Today one of those opinions comes from a rather influenetial voice in the market, and that is Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda.

Speaking to MCV it seems Yosuke Matsuda isn’t too keen on the business model of microtransactions, or at least not how they’re being implemented. In the interview he says:

“The way that console games are made, the volume of content and how much effort goes into them, there’s something in that which doesn’t fit in the mind with microtransactions.”

His view is that different audiences have different perceptions of microtransactions. In general he feels mobile gamers are more open to them than console gamers due to the many free to play titles on mobile. He also states the PC audience may be more open due to the amount of free to play games available on that platform.

For consoles though it appears Yosuke Matsuda is more in favour of DLC that adds experiences to the games Square Enix puts out.

“Our feelings on it is people have bought those games and we want them to be able to enjoy them and play them as long as possible. So after they’ve completed the game, to add extra things and give them new things to enjoy. That’s an important thing and very vital for us to provide that.”

We’ve seen such support recently with Final Fantasy XV and the various episodes that have been made to flesh out the story and characters. Of course we don’t know what the future holds and the stance could change.

I wonder what his thoughts are on pimping out beloved multi-platform franchises to the highest bidder? :D

I’m having it etched on my tomb stone… ‘Beloved… blah blah blah, Loved… blah blah blah, Cherished… blah blah blah, Gorgeous and insanely funny… blah blah blah, Current world record holder for the longest grudge held against Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics for betraying Tomb Raider fans in 2014, for money.’

Sounds quite good to me :D
