Sony kicked arse at E3, no doubt about it. So, it’s only taken another 2 days to put things back to how they were. ]SCEE president David Reeves told GI.biz that SCEA, the American division responsible for the PS3 over there, are discontinuing the 60GB model.
Whilst you might think that’s fine, because then the 80GB model will be standard, this kind of negates the whole point of the price cut. Essentially, the $499 model won’t exist, and there’ll only be the $599 model with Motorstorm and the 80GB hard drive. When asked about the US price cut, Reeves said “they’re not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game. All they’re doing is taking their stock in trade that they’ve got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.”
When asked to clarify if this will mean the end of the 60GB model, Reeves answered, “In America, yes.” SCEA needs to respond to this pronto otherwise there’s no good way to spin this bombshell.
