Valkyria Chronicles DLC?

We think Valkyria Chronicles, the amazing and jaw droppingly beautiful Sega RPG/RTS combo is officially great, and it should also be pointed out that the rest of the world agrees with us, as it carries a Metacritic score of 87.

Unfortunately the buying public didn’t agree as sales of the amazing game outside of Japan were a bit weak to say the least.

There are whisperings, well tweetings that something new is happening in the fictional land of Gallia. As Sega’s announced “Something new looms on Gallia’s horizon… are you ready?”  on the official Valkyria Chronicles Twitter account.

What this ‘something new’ is, isn’t known yet, but it is doubtful at this stage it’s going to be a sequel, and it is highly likely this announcement relates to the DLC which surfaced in Japan last year. That DLC included a whole new mission, an even harder skirmish mode, the ability to play as the evil invading Imperial forces, and obviously a whole new set of battles.

There were rumours of Trophies appearing in the game, but when you’ve only got a maximum of 140 characters to go on, details are obviously thin on the ground.

It’s rare that a game looks like a developer has put so much love, care and attention in to it, but this is one of those games. I loved Valkyria Chronicles, it truly is a unique gaming experience which pushes the boundaries and sits comfortably between two genres, which are under-represented on the PS3, in fact it’s got me that excited I’m going to fire up Valkyria as soon as I get in front of my PS3; I can’t wait to revisit Gallia.

Update.

The Valkyria Tribune Twitter feed has been updated with a new post, which only adds to the mystery.

“So it begins. _ o _ _ – _ _ _ _ _ _ – _ _ _ e – _ _ – _ _ _ _ _ s”

I’ve never been any good at Hangman, so in my intoxicated state I’m going to leave it until the morning to attempt to crack it, or hopefully someone will have posted the answer in the comments below. Please.

Update 2

Well the Valkyria Tribune has been been spouting off again, this time with a couple of extra letters to help us along the way on what must be Twitters hardest (only) ever hangman spin-off.

“_ o o _ – _ _ _ _ _ _ – _ _ _ e – _ n – _ _ _ _ _ s”

I’m none the wiser, but I probably wouldn’t get if there was only one letter missing. Intriguing though.

Update 3

I’ve got it, well I’ve got one of the words anyway ‘in’. Alright, alright they’ve given it away in the third clue, but for some reason I still feel slightly smug.

 “_ o o _ – _ _ _ _ _ _ – _ o _ e – i n – _ _ _ _ _ s”

Top tip from TSA regular Radboud is that it’s “Good things come in threes” good stuff mate, especially as English isn’t your first language. *hangs head in shame*

Update 4

I think we’ve cracked it, clue #4 seems to suggest we have, as the web’s longest and most useful hangman spin-off draws to a close.

“G o o d – _ _ _ _ _ _ – _ o _ e – i n – _ _ _ _ es”

Well done Radboud, honorary bronze Trophy on its way. Off to work out what ‘Good things come in threes’ will mean for the citizens of Gallia.

Update 5

We’ve almost, certainly, definitely got it!

“G o o d – _ _ _ _ _ s – co _e – i n – _ _ _ _ es”

Come on SEGA, keep up with TSA, we’re on to the next puzzle of trying to work out what it means.

Update 6

Now we have had a Day 7 & 8 update but since TSA (well Radboud) already solved it there didn’t seem much point in updating this post, but now we’ve moved on to a whole new puzzler with the Valkyria Tribune’s Day 8 part II clue.

“Good things come in threes. 1-_-_-_-_”

I’m far to drunk to work it out, and am still trying to watch Comic Relief whilst being extremely pleased that they have raised a record ‘on the night’ total, luckily there is still time for you to choose to help make a difference if you haven’t done so already.

Update 7

“Good things come in threes. 1-0-_-_-_”

Update 8

“Good things come in threes. 1-0-3-6-_”

Update 9

“So it ends. Good things come in threes: 1-0-3-6-9…. It will all make sense soon.”

I hope it does make more sense (very) soon because the digits has only deepened the puzzle rather than solve it.

Update 10

As mentioned on the 11th (comment 16, thanks Phil_K), it is in fact three new packs: Edy Nelson missions, Selvaria Bles missions and the Extra Hard mode. Full details below from C&VG.

  • Hard EX Mode – fight your way once more through the entire Imperial army, where the enemies are more lethal and your main tank Edelweiss is unavailable. You’ll have to be more strategic in order to overcome your opponents.
  • Edy’s Mission “Enter the Edy Detachment” – six members have been separated from Squad 7 and on their journey to reunite with the squad, they stumble upon a tiny village under attack by the Imperial Army. Play as Edy and command your outnumbered team to defend the small village from annihilation.
  • Selvaria’s Mission “Behind Her Blue Flame” – this mission takes place right after the outbreak of Gallian battle lines and you play as Johann, a young and meek engineer, assigned to Selvaria’s troop. See the action as it unfolds behind enemy lines and see the war play out through the eyes of the enemy.

Now we can finally move on, I never knew Twitter could be so puzzling, Professor Layton better watch out.
