This month’s Edge magazine, available to subscribers now, has a 10 page article on id’s Rage, including news from the development version that the PlayStation 3 version is currently only managing to run the game at 20-30 frames per second whilst the Xbox 360 version is flying along at 60. “The PS3 lags a little bit behind in terms of getting the performance out of it,” said id’s John Carmack speaking to Edge. “The rasteriser is just a little bit slower – no two ways about that.”
Carmack added that “The RSX is slower than what we have in the 360. The CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off, and that’s what a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3.” Thankfully the team are still working hard on improving the optimisation of both versions, and the official Rage Twitter account claims that “we are committed to ensuring that gamers on all platforms have a great RAGE experience.”
The tweet doesn’t flat out say that they’ll be able to get the PS3 version up to scratch, mind, but let’s hope they at least bring it somewhere near. Rage is due out next year.
