NPD Sales For September: PS3 On Top

The delayed NPD sales figures, which are taken from various outlets across the States, are now available, and the PlayStation 3 is on top in terms of console hardware sales for the first time, with 491,800 units shifted second only to the Nintendo DS.  For reference, the Xbox 360 shifted 352,600 units and the Wii 462,800, which reasonable figures for the PSP (190,400) and the PS2 (146,000) presumably making Sony very happy indeed.

“Compared to last September,” said NPD’s Anita Frazier, “the PS3 was the big winner, more than doubling last year’s sales. This portrays a very strong consumer reaction to the price decrease as August and September both realized a lift of more than 70% over the prior month. This is the first month that the PS3 has captured the top spot in console hardware sales.”

In terms of software it appears Halo is still king, with 1.52M copies sold.  “Halo 3 certainly impacted the industry two years ago (Sep’07) when it was launched, and this year, Halo 3: ODST realized impressive sales making it the 6th best-selling SKU launch of all time,” said Frazier. “Five of the top 10 software items for the month were on the Xbox 360 platform.”
