GeoHot Responds

George Hotz, or Geohot as he is known has today replied in a blog posting to the news that Sony’s latest PS3 firmware update will remove the OtherOS option. He has said:

A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat’s Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that’s how you want to play…

This looks little more than an attempt to gain the moral high ground by stating that he never intended to touch CFW (custom firmware) personally I’m not sure what he expected after he used an opening in OtherOS to run code in GameOS, and layer by layer he has circumvented the PS3’s security measures which help make it an attractive platform to release games on.

Backers of Geohot’s work may point to the fact that his exploiting the system  is merely opening the door (although reverse engineering and circumventing security isn’t only unlawful its actually illegal in most developed countries,) and that it is others who will carry out the unlawful actions, that may be so but why should a company that has spent billions of dollars in R&D standby and allow people to exploit it. Whilst there are a few advantages of CFW, we all know that 99% of these activities end up with exploits running pirated software.
