According to this thread on forum NextGenUpdate, wily anarchists/OtherOS users are no longer able to circumvent the practice of connecting to the PSN with older firmware through security backdoors.
Penguin lovers, defiant in their resistance to Sony’s recent firmware update (3.21), had continued to sign-in to the PSN without the mandatory requirement of updating through such methods as either faking their DNS or installing proxy programs to dupe the PSN into thinking they, like millions of others, had updated to the newer firmware. Through these evasions, some users have retained the ability to use the OtherOS feature; functionality the latest update removes due to Sony’s concerns about the future security of their product. As of yesterday, both the DNS and proxy methods are now reported as no longer working.
Original poster of the topic, MAA, states:
“The DNS bypass was originally used by many as a way of holding out for GeoHot’s custom firmware to allow the Other OS function. It is my personal opinion that people will continue to push GeoHot for a release of his firmware, as many people believe they can become expert hackers by using it.”
It should be mentioned that there has been no official comment from Sony confirming the crackdown of these exploits. Of course, we’ll send the obligatory mail over and see what they say. Expect the standard “We do not comment on rumour, speculation or Yoshida-san’s hair” response.
As always, TheSixthAxis does not condone custom firmwares, bypassing DNS servers, proxy masking or the testing of nuclear weapons in the South Pacific by the French.
Thanks TSBonyman.
