After the God of War Collection, which by all accounts sold rather well, Sony went looking further afield for more inspiration, more PS2-era games to reboot, remix and redo in HD. Of course, we all know about the Sly Cooper pack, but there’s also the nuggets we’ve heard about the Team Ico Collection and the notion that Sony themselves are courting ideas from the public.
But, back to that Sly Cooper pack, which appears to be pushing a brand new branding for Sony – ‘Classics HD’ – reproduced below.

See? Whether or not this is intended to be used down the line is not really that important right now, the fact is that a) the box-art is real, and b) Sony are confident enough in the success of this particular remake to consider branding it. The killer would be if the God of War Collection came out with a new box-art complete with the same graphics at the top of the cover, but that would just be icing on the cake.
So, God of War, Sly Cooper and, hopefully, Ico and Shadow. Hopes are high then that the publisher will continue to plunder the PS2’s back catalogue, crate digging for the best the console had to offer and tarting everything up in a nice high-definition, 60 fps sheen. I’d kill for a touch up job on Gran Turismo 4 by the way, guys, if you’re stuck for something to do in-between Sly and Ico…

No doubt Sony will fluff this and Microsoft will sneak in and re-do some Xbox classics steal the market share and leave Sony behind thinking WTF?

What Xbox classics could they really release though? After the two Halo games and Fable 1 you’d already be scraping the barrel as far as first party stuff there goes.
Besides, the whole point of these PS2 updates is taking advantage of the greatly increased disc space the PS3 has over the PS2, the 360 offers no such advantage over the original Xbox, so could you even fit more than one game on a disc for any such collections? And wouldn’t that ‘interfere’ with them already selling the biggest Xbox games on Xbox Live at a greatly reduced price? Also, weren’t original Xbox games already supporting HD way back when?(Not in Europe of course)
Can’t see it happening basically.

It would be nice to see the idea of these classics take off, but I can’t see too many third party developers getting on board with it unless they could farm out the upgrading to the same companies Sony are using maybe. It would make a stupid amount of sense for Capcom to do a Devil May Cry trilogy release for example, and for Konami to do the MGS games, even though the PS1 original may be a sticking point there… port the Gamecube remake perhaps? Nah, too much work.
I personally would LOVE to see Jak and Daxter get this treatment (And come the next Naughty Dog release they probably will), but who wants to bet there’ll be a flood of ‘outrage’ when Jak X and the poor Lost Frontier aren’t included in the J&D collection? I’d be very surprised if they were at any rate. Five games in one? We should be so lucky.
Also, Sly Collection sounds like a great buy and all, but I get the feeling it may be more expensive than God of War Collection was due to the fact it’s three games this time as opposed to 2, and a lot more work has seemingly been done on the Sly games from the sound of it. Probably be a full retail price release for this one.
