The “What will Kinect cost?” merry-go-round continues a-spinning, with retailer ShopTo quoting their RRP for Microsoft’s new room-destroyer at a princely £129.99 in the UK. A release date is also quoted – November 19th. Officially the device’s price is still under consideration, but it’s looking highly likely that the $149.99 US figure (also still to be ratified by Microsoft) will not be translating into a sub £100 comparative amount in the UK. Can’t wait for the euro equivalent.
What say you? Too high? Just right for the technology on offer? Are UK gamers getting ripped off based on current currency exchange rates? Have your say in the comments. It will make you feel better.

Kinect is this year’s PSP Go.

Ouch. I don’t see that price tag winning many friends in the casual market – certainly not for anyone who doesn’t already own a 360.
Saw the ad for the slim 360 on telly the other day, made me smile: ‘Here today. Ready for tomorrow. *coming soon’. So, not quite ‘here today’ then, is it?
MrTwP
noo, the coming soon bit is the repaired console…

I think its a big pricey, and as others have said it will probably put off the casual market as they’ll buy a Wii instead for more or less the same price.
Personally, I’m more excited about the Move than I am about Kinatal or whatever its called now.

Kinect is turning into a bit of a joke. Microsoft do not know what casual consumers want. Look at the joke that was the Kin. Microsoft were bigging it up as the phone to own if you were a super cool tween who loves social interaction. It came out, and there were claims that they only managed to shift 500 units nationwide (US). Microsoft have now cancelled any further development and production of the Kin. Likewise Microsoft are not going to do well with Kinect. It’s aimed at a similar market, and Microsoft just don’t know how to approach it. I’d bet my house on it being a huge flop. Reports are coming from ShopTo that pre-orders have been very low, and most retailers are urging Microsoft to lower the price. Don’t get me wrong, the technology in it is amazing, but that will not appeal to the casual market or the core market. I know I’m going to sound like a mega fanboy now, but… The draw of the Move, and the original eye toy was that it put you in the game. Not an avatar (BAM!) of you. Seeing yourself on the screen whilst you played the game allowed for much better focus on the interaction, as you could definitely see where you were, and what you were doing as you played the game. The step forward with the Move, that will really add to the magic that Eye Toy brought us, is augmented reality. Seeing yourself on the screen with a huge battle axe, tennis racquet, gun, etc. will have more wow factor that just jumping around in front of the screen, and nothing to relate it to in the game apart from some flaying avatar that has a good job at copying what you are trying to tell it to do.

I just laughed at the advertisement that appeared in my browser next to this article – honestly, funny stuff! Couldn’t have set it up better if you tried!

More ‘inept’ than Kinect me thinks!

I don’t see many people basing their console choice on motion gaming – those that are enthusiastic about it will probably still go Wii – so it basically comes down to existing owners and headline prices. Round 1 to Sony if these prices are to be believed.
I also don’t buy into the 2 x Move/Subs is almost as much as 1 x Kinect. I know a fair number of 360 owners and a grand total of zero of them will likely want to buy Kinect in order to open up family/living room gaming. They’d rather sit on their lonesome enjoying gaming like they always do. In that case, £130 is steep vs the PS3’s £35 + £25.
I remain to be convinced that Kinect isn’t going to be a massive flop. For all people are saying the Move is akin to the Wii’s system….look at the success the Wii has had, so is that necessarily a bad thing? If either Sony or MS are going to have a (small) share of the profits from that market, then it looks more likely to be heading in the PS3’s direction.

Family’s will think thats the console AND the Kinect cam too!
Really should be aiming the £79-99-£99.99 bracket..otherwise it will definitely have trouble selling…thats like a console price!

The whole motion controller thing just reeks of gimmick to me. Ninty’s done it relatively well (read: monetarily) and Sony and MS want a slice of the cake too, just about 3 years too late.
The pricing is ludicrous for what is essentially a couple of square inches of camera.
At least the Move is something tangible you can hold in your hands and suited to the pricing, but it’s still a bit of a clone of the WiiMote with a tennis ball on the end.
I can’t see it catching on at all. Especially not at these kinds of prices when you can buy a console for the same price as a peripheral.

Ouch! That is pricey … im out!
