Microsoft Claim Kinect Is The Cheapest

Judging from the majority of comments on yesterday’s Kinect price announcement, Microsoft seems to have struck a nerve, with most of our readers saying the cost – £130 – is simply too high.  Well now a couple of charts have been released showing Microsoft’s justification for the $150 price tag showing the costs against the PlayStation Move and the Wii for those that own a console already, and for those that don’t:

Interesting charts, and the first thing that springs to mind is that – if this is a true like for like comparison – is Microsoft admitting Kinect is a two player device only?

It is also slightly skewed in Microsoft’s favour.  The Wii Balance Board is by no means essential for the Wii motion experience – and we already know that the Move’s Navigation controller can be substituted for a DualShock 3.  Add in the fact people might already own the PlayStation Eye and Kinect hasn’t quite got the competition licked.

Is Kinect’s pricing the worst thing ever?  Probably not – but it’s not as rosy as Microsoft like to think.

  1. lick my balls microsap
you want me to weigh out for a console with no hard drive and get the kinnect bundled in.
mmmmm how long before i run out of memory and will then need to purchase a harddrive no doubt costing in excess of £80.00
this will then push your console price over the £200 pound mark

    • You, sir, have a delightful way with words. Ha! :-)

  2. The thing MS are missing is a lot of us already have PS Eyes (surely they didnt just make Eyetoy to flog them in preperation for Move.. noooo). For Many PS3 owners the cost of going to motion control is one WaveyGlowStick, we already own everything else. Xbox owners HAVE to fork out £129 quid in one go.

    • I, along with a vast number of other folk, have an Eyetoy already. Frustratingly, I’ve yet to see a Move bundle that takes that into account. Seriously unimpressed.

      • just what i was thinking, i want a bundle that simply has a motion controller and a navigation controller, nothing else

  3. damn right tuffers.
even the bundle for £49.99 ps eye and move controller is a steal in my books.
hell might even get myself an eyepet fo around £7.00 solus

  4. Aren’t Move games cheaper at RRP aswell? I read Kinect titles are $50 and £40 RRP. That’s taking the piss cutting US prices by £10 and charging the UK the same price as a good game.

  5. M$ really are starting to irritate to a new level. Surely by talking such crap other people will show more realistic comparisons and show that their product is actually badly overpriced. For their 1 comment there much be hundreds of sights putting ‘alternative’ comparisons to make M$ look bad, and inadvertedly make Sony and Nintendo look better than they actually are.
These last 2 comments from M$ really do sound like desperation.

    • Agh, just realised this is not M$, some some wum taking the piss. Intersting how the user thinks if you already have a wii it costs $160 to get motion control. I have motion control on my wii for an additional $0, which is significantly cheaper than move or kinn€ct.

  6. How come films use balls to help cameras with motion tracking an actors body movements? Why don’t they use kinect…

  7. FATALITY.

Anyway, who really cares what they cost in comparison to others? You have a product in front of you. You like the price get it, you don’t, don’t.

Seriously, I care more about the damned content and games then squabbling over the prices.

  8. I read in a report on ign the other day that a ms exec person geezer said that all launch titles for kinect will be restricted to 2 players, he also stated that it may have been because developers hadn’t had enough time with the new tech to be able to use more players, it is something they will be looking into at a later date, basically it is probably going to stay as 2 player with kinect 2 for xbox 720 having support for more than 2 players

  9. This hasnt done MS any favours, its done exactly the opposite because people are cleaver enough to know what they need.

  10. I’m all for bias charts and all that, but this one does seem to be skewed that little bit far.
