Gears of War game designer Cliff Bleszinski spoke at Comic-Con about the problems with Gears Of War movie. The film slid into development hell earlier in the year when director Len Wiseman jumped ship.
Cliffy B said that they are looking back at the script and may possibly start again from scratch. The aim is to reduce the $100 million plus budget with Bleszinski stating the want to make the movie “more like District 9” – District 9 being a well received Sci-fi film that was produced for just $30 million.

District 9 was immense, loved it. Not sure a Gears film would be that interesting to be honest.

Don’t know much about Gears of War but any movie based on a game has to go some way to change public perceptions i.e. film adaptions of games are generally poor. And as its the games seem to be about big blokes killing aliens, you can’t help that its all been done before…(Aliens, anyone?).
I am happy to have perception corrected if it is misguided – like I said, never played the games.

it’s as you said it. Big men killing Aliens. All been done before basically.

I think movies based on games have to break away from the story telling conventions that plague games, or at least try games that are more cinematic in content and scope.

I really can’t see Gears of War 3 translating to film.
For starters, as has been stated above, the basic concept has been done plenty of times before.
Secondly, even the likes of Vin Diesel and co. would look scrawny compared to the exaggerated muscles of Gears.

As much as I like Gears 1 and 2 the story is atrocious. The first one didn’t have any that resembled a story just a series of pretty locations with alien to kill.
