DeathSpank 2 Announced

Surprising more than a few of us with its timing, DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue, a sequel to last month’s enjoyable orphan-assisting Deathspank, has been announced. The unexpected digital follow-up has a release date of September 21st on the PSN (in the US), with XBL getting more spankage the next day.

Part two will see the titular chisel-chinned hero take to the sea as a pirate, as well as the frosty climes of what we can only assume to be what passes as the North Pole in DeathSpank land. The fast-quipping buffoon will also extend his projectile abilities with guns now added to an already jampacked armoury.

The press release reveals the game’s plot:

“A long time ago, nine mystical thongs were planned to bring balance and harmony to the universe, but when marketing got in the way, only six thongs were produced, and the result was disastrous. Granting great power to those who wear them, the thongs corrupted all those they touched—except DeathSpank. DeathSpank must find all six thongs and destroy them once and for all.”

If you think it’s a little soon for a new DeathSpank, apparently both the original and its sequel were in development simultaneously. The follow-up also promises to be 50% longer, a quality we’re not bemoaning, especially considering we found the first game sufficiently long for the price of admission.

Finally, there’s some confusion as to just how much (if at all) Ron Gilbert is involved with this sequel, especially considering the game designer and writer is no longer working with developer Hothead. Some sources are saying yes, others not so much. We’ll continue to look into it. Regardless, we’re looking forward to another tale brimming with poop and puns next month when DeathSpank 2 arrives.

  1. Fan-flippin-tastic.
Deathspank is probably my favourite PSN game ever and having only recently completed it I was really hoping for a sequel especially with the teaser ending. AWESOME news

    • You’re welcome, multiple shirt wearing person!

      • Actually I’m naked right now

      • ew.

      • Gross. Why don’t you put on 3shirts.
Hahaha, oh sometimes I just crack myself up

        Best. Comeback. Ever. 3shirts FTW!

      • ^ I have always wanted a subtitle in that bit where it says ‘Member’

  2. What strange timing! Surely if they were in development together then Ron Gilbert would have had a hand in both. I still haven’t gotten around to getting the first yet, I think this is a bit soon!

  3. wow i haven’t even got round to the first one yet (demo was brilliant though especially when you try to have a conversation with the wise cow :p)

    • Cow is awesome though it ges even weirder later on.

  4. I haven’t actually gotten round to playing the first one yet, nice to know if I enjoy it I’ll be able to get another helping straightaway.

  5. already?
these guys could teach valve a lesson or two. :)

  6. Hammered the 1st one, 100% of trophies in a couple of days. Reckon it took 15 hours of gameslay, that’s a couple of unhealthy long sessions there. Thing is, it’s that type of game, you think you’ve been playing 5 minutes but look up at the clock and it’s been hours. Great game.

    • Gameplay* d’oh

    • I did the same thing. One night I said to the missus that i’d be up to bed in a few minutes when I finished the mission, when I finally made it to bed it was 3 hours later and 2am!

  7. Excellent news, loved ‘DeathSpank’, everything about it was awesome.

I do hope its the same price as the 1st though, even if it is 50% longer.

  8. Dang i was getting round to buying the 1st one now with the 2nd one due soon will i wait a couple of weeks extra and wait fro the inevitable price drop or 2 game bundle

  9. I just bought the first one. It’s great so far; it’s been a while since I found a game I look forward to playing each evening.

  10. Some extra info:

No online co-op, but your offline friend on the couch can use a Kung Fu fighter named Steve next to Sparkles who was already available in the first episode.

Price will be the same as the first episode.
