Sony Can Detect PS3 Hackers; Ban Their Punk Asses

Forewarning potential digital pirates of possible repercussions from using the new PSJailbreak dongle as a way to illegally back-up PS3 games, hacking website PS3Hax.net are claiming that Sony will be able to dish out PSN bannings to those who choose to steal games. The site states:

“The Backup manager game ID could be logged/recorded by Sony when logged into PSN (when online). This would obviously allow Sony to see who would be using the illegal PSjb/clone and we could very well see ban waves similar to the Xbox 360.”

The news hardly comes as a shock, with Sony sure to be working around the clock on a response to combat what is viewed as the biggest threat to their previously impervious PS3 software library. The tit-for-tat dance between Sony and hackers is sure to continue, however, with likely future firmware updates and possible banhammers on the horizon as both camps attempt to best one another.

We abhor piracy here at TheSixthAxis and highlight such potential bannings as a warning to those who may be contemplating using the device. Don’t. If not for your own enjoyment of games, then for the wider gaming industry which undoubtedly suffers from piracy.

  1. I just hope people don’t start getting banned if they haven’t done anything wrong such is the case with Microsoft. Where the ban hammer lands nobody knows

  2. hammer there heads.

  3. Good job Sony!

  4. Great choice of title, I must say.
    But I agree.
    BAN THEM ASSES!

    • I would have preferred the British spelling. Unless we are actually talking about banning donkeys but I don’t think they play many games anyway.

      • Punk donkeys no less. Funny image

      • Donkey or man, ban them regardless!

  5. I totally agree with Sony and the banning’s, they have every right to protect the interests of themselves, the developers and the publishers.
However, the industry needs to take a look at its self and just understand what the real reason for this is. Publisher’s and Console Manufacturer’s are squeezing gamers extremely tight for every single penny and pound, to the point that it is actually shameful, in my humble opinion. Sony or Microsoft charging £100+ to fix a console that had a manufacturing fault only 13 months after you bought it. THQ, Activision and EA all, having already done so or about to, at least, implement a pay-2-play-online 2nd hand code.
Is it any wonder lots of gamers feel aggrieved, especially considering that some of the best developers in the world are staffed by the people who grew up building homebrew games for the Sinclair or BBC consoles.
The industry would be much better off if they actually released a cheap, manageable and safe way for creative individuals to release miniature games for free on their platform. That way they rubbish any arguments that the hacking software is for homebrew and not piracy.

  6. good news, as long as this is implementd while they’re working on a fix

  7. That’s great news!! Personally I can’t understand why you’d want to pirate stuff?? You can’t beat the anticipation of cracking open a new game – I love it! Well done Sony!

  8. I haven’t bought a PS3 game in over a year yet have played many of the most recent titles…how? No through piracy but through renting them.

Why do people need to pirate? If you play a game for its online or with your mates then buy it…if you play a game, complete it and then will most likely never play it again rent the damn thing saving you money!!!

I am a member of swapgame.com and boomerangrentals.xo.uk and pay each £3.99 a month and I get one game a month from both…easy!!!

    • Just been checking out that Swapgame website , seems like a good deal . I rented with Lovefilm in the first year or so of the PS3’s release and kind of eventually ran out of good games to rent but now im tempted as there are so many decent titles I have yet to play . £3.99 a month is a bargain .

  9. Serves them right! But one question, when can we see the firmware update from Sony that disableds the USB ports?

    • They don’t have to disable the USB ports, only devices that use certain USB device descriptors.
Of course that will probably make it a cat and mouse game between Sony and the pirates.

      • they can’t or they will get sued and noone would buy the console

    This isn’t piracy, but another form of dodgy dealing – I’ve noticed TSA running ads for SwipeBids, who it turns out might be a bunch of scam artists;

Something you might want to look into.
