Confirmed: 3.42 Kills PSJailbreak, PSGroove

As expected, today’s release of Firmware 3.42 has killed off the recent USB-based hack attempts such as PSJailbreak and PSGroove, preventing the recent trick from making any changes to retail PS3s.

Although Sony have legally blocked the initial hack, everyone expected them to patch the hole in the firmware too and prevent future attempts.  We all thought this would happen, but it’s good to see in for ourselves.

Some may moan that the latest firmware also blocks the ‘open source’ and piracy-free alternative, but since the so-called ‘backup’ manager could be patched back in, we’re glad Sony are attempting to close up the holes.

The cat and mouse chase begins.

  1. I wonder if it specifically blocks PSJailbreak (and its legal & illegal clones) or if the firmware has removed the USB ports from the bootup process.

If its the former, I’d have thought they’d be a workaround before too long but if its the latter, then that’s it – GAME OVER for the pirates and homebrew coders.

    • To answer my own question… the PS3 still seeks to boot from USB drives, it just doesn’t recognise or execute PSJailbreak (or its clones) code. That means options to exploit the system via USB haven’t been closed off permanently, just that this specific code is blocked from running.

      • that means coders will be looking to patch the psgroove to boot with new keys to unlock the ps3 again.

with this said it could go 1 of 2 ways. the hackers will find the keys quickly and sony will be back to squar 1 or it will take alot longer to find them and then sony will have more time to look at stronger ways to combat it

  2. For those who missed it the new firmware has already been cracked.

    Quelle surprise.

    • that was quick!

    • So much for that then.

    • If you’re talking about the ability to connect online with 3.41 via a workaround, then as that ability can be switched off Sony’s end any second, and it doesn’t enable anything at all in 3.42 I wouldn’t call it a crack, more a loophole which will be closed off asap. Unless of course you know something else

  3. all games from fifa 11 ( 1st oct) will probably need 3.42 to play, further making psjailbreak useless

    • They will patch the kopied gamefiles to not check for the firmware version. Or let the hack fake the firmware version.

I for one was hoping to get some new features with the new firmware.. As they did with the psp.. but hey offline/online gaming is probaly enough to get people to update their ps3..

  4. Aw, they’ve killed the groove too.

  5. That was quick!!

  6. I think the updates wouldn’t attract as much hate if they were smaller but you have to download the whole 160MB for each update

  7. It’s nice to have new features in system updates, has that suddenly become a thing of the past……….?

  8. And so it begins.

I guess if they had broken anything else in the process we would know about it by now, so I’m guessing it’s safe to install now.
