Confirmed: 3.42 Kills PSJailbreak, PSGroove

As expected, today’s release of Firmware 3.42 has killed off the recent USB-based hack attempts such as PSJailbreak and PSGroove, preventing the recent trick from making any changes to retail PS3s.

Although Sony have legally blocked the initial hack, everyone expected them to patch the hole in the firmware too and prevent future attempts.  We all thought this would happen, but it’s good to see in for ourselves.

Some may moan that the latest firmware also blocks the ‘open source’ and piracy-free alternative, but since the so-called ‘backup’ manager could be patched back in, we’re glad Sony are attempting to close up the holes.

The cat and mouse chase begins.

  1. Todays release of Firmware 3.42*
Thanks for the confirmation Newsbot :)

  2. Just as I hoped.

    • I hear ya, man. Haven’t enough systems been hacked already!? Just leave our precious PS3s alone!

  3. I don’t think this makes much of a difference to be honest. Not long before the hackers will find a new exploit. And before we know it, us normal paying customers will be downloading security update patches every week.

    • You are right! Sony MUST be behind the hackers! It’s so they can update every week which no one wants! That means everyone would by PS+ to save them hassle! OMG!

      • Slight overreaction Tuffcub! He wasn’t blaming Sony, just making a, frankly quite astute, observation.

      • I also wonder how long it will take for this to escalate onto a hardware level battle between Sony and the hackers. When Sony realized they couldn’t keep plugging any more holes on the PSP firmware, they simply built a new unhackable motherboard for the newer units and accepted the casualties. I haven’t followed the psp scene at all lately, but I assume that has been circumvented by modders at this point aswell. Seems it’s impossible to build a completely secure system.

      • TC is having a shit day with the Tubes!! This is going to become a very regular thing though with security patches. Still, it protects gaming.

      • @spats — The PSP scene is all but dead in terms of hacking since they have yet to find a way around current hardware blocks. The primary issue is the actual use of a previously unverified block of the boot loader used on the magic memory sticks. Last I had checked they had not yet reverse-engineered it. The original individual who was doing most of the major CFW for the PSP stopped doing new ones and I got tired of the fact that I was missing out on certain other Sony provided items that I ended going legit and flashing an OFW on mine.

    • Get Playstation Plus and the updates will automaticly download themselfe.

      • Great, you buying?

      • Does it do game updates too or just system?

      • Every 48 hours (at a time you set in the options) it downloads all software updates (if available) for the 10 most recent games you’ve played and turns off the system after installation.

Mine runs at 3am and when I next turn it on, I get a popup box telling what has been downloaded

      • nice, that’s actually pretty handy as I hate logging on to play a game and finding I have to download a fat patch even if I wanna play offline. Though the whole thing is moot till I replace my YLOD’d system.

  4. Great work.

  5. so will this cause any problems if I want to back up my hard drive? As I want to change it for a bigger one soon?

  6. shouldn’t do, this won’t remove any features such as backups.

  7. A firmware to block an exploit.
Makes me wonder if they should allow non-PS+ users to use the automatic download feature for updates :-p

    • they should do, its a feature that should of been in the box from day 1 IMO

      • Is it such a pain to switch on your console? PS+ owners paid for such features.

      • What is a pain is turning on your console to play (you know, that thing we bought it for) and finding you can’t play online because you need an update which can take a very long time to download and install.
I don’t think I should be paying for automatic updates. Microsoft, money grabbing bastards that they are, don’t make me pay for Windows to update itself!

      • No, but Microsoft don’t even cater for automatic updates at all even though I pay 60€ a year for live.

  8. shame, i was looking forward to some good apps…

  9. This is good for Sony, but if people really want to use these hacks can’t they just download the correct firmware from a variety of websites?

  10. They still need to block so 3.41 firmwares can’t go online, it’s pretty easy to avoid this update via proxy apps :/
