WWE SvR 2011 Gets ‘Universe’ Mode

It is a common complaint that current wrestling games have gotten a bit stale – well THQ plan to shake things up with the introduction of its ‘Universe’ mode.  What this means is the game will track all playing habits and automatically generate a customized WWE world for players to enjoy.  It will also react to your decisions during gameplay, and as a result, generate future matchups between allies, rivals and contenders.

For example:

“If the player had selected John Cena and really pummelled The Miz in a match, it is possible The Miz may seek out some revenge with a sneak attack during Cena’s next trip to the ring.  He could also lay out Cena with the Skull Crushing Finale or buy a front row ticket to get a closer look at his opponent.  Being attacked during an entrance, having a guest commentator present, being abandoned by a tag team partner and post-match beatdowns are just a few of the unpredictable events players can encounter in the Universe.  In fact, there are more than 100 brand new cut scenes that players will see exclusively WWE Universe, each one affecting Superstar relationships and continually evolving the gameplay experience.”

Think this sounds too much like hard work?  Well the Universe mode can be turned on or off at anytime.  I’ve not said this for almost a decade, but if this mode is more than just smoke and mirrors then SvR 2011 is a wrestling game I’m actually interested in.

  1. Sounds very interesting, persistent tracking seems to crop up more and more in games now.

  2. think my last wrestling game purchase was : here comes the pain.

    but this seems really cool.

  3. i swaer they said they would be doing something where the game reacted to your decisions with one of the previous games, and it ended up meaning very little.

i don’t have much faith that this will be any different.

  4. ‘Universe’? That suggests to me bringing in aliens to the game. Just like in Futurama at Madison Cube Garden.

Can you imagine The Rock versus The Slime Beast With Twenty Arms from Ursa Minor Beta?!

    • wwe now calls all its fans and people within the WWE ‘the WWE Universe’ because Mr McMahon (the chairman of WWE) thought it was demeaning to call the fans ‘fans’.

  5. Yeah, the Universe mode was actually unveiled during IGN’s unveiling of the SmackDown vs Raw 2011 game (the game’s first) and has been one of the things they’ve been advertising heavily as a feature everywhere; at E3, Amazon, the recent Roster Reveal with Gamestop, etc. Have you heard?

    • Maybe that’s better rephrased as, “Have you just heard?”, but the irony would be gone.

  6. i do not understand this “universe” mode =1
