MS Details Xbox 360 Dashboard Update

Microsoft has gone into more detail with regards to its upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update.  As well as adding Kinect and Zune functionality it will also provide the following:

  • Improved voice quality – the audio codec is being updated to improve Xbox LIVE Party chat audio quality.
  • Improved experience for changing your Gamertag – choosing a new Gamertag? If the Gamertag you’re looking for is already taken, your Avatar will spin a wheel which will provide five other Gamertag suggestions at a time for you to choose from.
  • Streamlined in-dashboard virtual keyboard – they have taken the existing QWERTY keyboard in-dash and made it easier to use for scenarios that involve repeated text entry, for example when signing up for Live within the dashboard.
  • Improved Xbox Live Marketplace UI and browse experience – the Games Marketplace has been re-organized to provide streamlined access to the games and content you want, reducing the number of steps it takes to get to a download.
  • Avatar changes – they have made your Avatars slightly more proportional so you can better play Kinect games.
  • Easier to get on a wireless network – trying to connect to a wireless network? With the next update, you’ll see a list of all the wireless networks within range when you go into network settings. From there, you’ll be able to select a new network or further configure the network you’re connected to.
  • Ability to sign-out other controllers in the sign-in UI – they are adding the ability to sign-out profiles on other controllers in the sign-in UI within the Guide. This is especially useful when playing games like Rock Band.
  • New browse experience for 100 per cent completed games – you spent a lot of time and effort earning those Achievements, so instead of only being able to view your first dozen completed games, they are giving you a new and better way to browse all of them.

The update will go live on November 4th.  Be there or be square.

  1. “Improved experience for changing your Gamertag – choosing a new Gamertag? If the Gamertag you’re looking for is already taken, your Avatar will spin a wheel which will provide five other Gamertag suggestions at a time for you to choose from.”

    How is that improved?

    • Because it has a wheel!! everyone loves wheels!

    • “Because wheels make the xbox go round” (in sing song voice).
I shall now hang my head in shame.

    • Because Microsoft assumes we’re all 7 year olds. I really don’t like how annoyingly playful Avatars are. It just makes the whole Xbox experience seem childish.

      • That’s because 99% of xbox owners ARE 7 year olds.

  2. I wonder if the sign-out controller feature will work when playing Forza 3 with a wheel? It’s a pain at the moment as you lose an analogue stick. I’ve got the new dash as part of the preview program so might give it a go.

  3. i only have a ps3, but if i had a 360 i would be looking forward to this update i think

    • Me too, shame we can’t get that many features in one update. Wouldn’t mind Sony to copy their ‘Gametag’ ideas either. How bout, once a month spin a wheel and b told if your allowed to change your name at all this month!

  4. “New browse experience for 100 per cent completed games – you spent a lot of time and effort earning those Achievements, so instead of only being able to view your first dozen completed games, they are giving you a new and better way to browse all of them.”

    – Sounds like they’re trying to come up with an Xbox alternative to Platinum Trophies!

    • I certainly wouldn’t mind more being done with Trophies. For example, unlocking items in Home for earning certain trophies, or exclusive Spaces only accessible to those above a certain trophy level. Well, I might have cared about such changes if Home didn’t suck, but sadly much of the hollow wilderness’ initial golden promises remain unfulfilled. Instead, how about those among the upper echelons of trophy greatness being rewarded with something akin to a watered down PSPlus? Priority access to betas and such. Why not? Sony should recognise and reward the loyalty of their devoted customers, and I think this would be a great way to do it.

  5. Haven’t turned on my xbox for over 4 months.

    • LOL! I can’t even remember when I last used mine!

  6. Should read: “The update will go live on November 4th. Be there or be playing Gran Turismo 5.”

    • Hum… That made me think…

A quick question: Can anyone make this update to the xbox? What I mean is… My live subscription ends in the end of October… Can I update the console normaly or can I only do it if i’m Gold? (i’m new to the xbox so I don’t have the finnest idea).

      • You should be able to update with a silver account. But these are primarily all gold feature updates anyways, aside from the controller sign in I suppose…
