TSA’s Top 100 of 2011 – #92 The Witcher 2

If you had told us two fantasy games from two Polish studios would feature so early in our Top 100 Games of 100 list (and so near one another), we would have said “Oh, that’s … interesting.”

Currently only confirmed for a PC release, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is expected early next year, with console editions heavily hinted at by developer CD Projekt RED for sometime later. That said, the first Witcher was also supposed to hit consoles before being unceremoniously dumped, so don’t be surprised if this stays PC only.

The titular Witcher of the series is Geralt of Rivia, a travelling monster-killer for hire with supernatural powers, back again for another bout of nastie evisceration. The first game was received quite well by critics (low 80s on Metacritic), its rousing score and “consequence system” where decisions impact how the plot plays out noted as particular highlights. The sequel also sports some quality voice acting and updates to its combat system, though details on the latter are a little scarce at the moment. It’s also rumoured to have more endings than an X-men member.

The last time we discussed The Witcher 2 we included footage showing the game’s heroes intervening in a hanging. We mentioned other clips available at the time and, just for kicks, here’s one of them embedded for your viewing pleasure. Every game should have a pissed elf.

  1. Yay! I really really hope this is coming to consoles (my ageing PC is well… ageing)as I really enjoyed the first one on PC although I never got round to finishing it. Only at 92 though for you guys, so you cant be expecting that much from it. Either that or because it has an uncertain future on consoles and not promoted/advertised much.

    • Indeed. Some of us don’t game on the PC so would not be that familiar with Witcher 1. Those of us that are aware of the first game or are excited about the sequel arriving on consoles based on what we’ve seen have helped get this one on the list.

    • i loved the first one but like you i never finished it. my brother saved over my game!

  2. Ooo, I liked the trailer. It was a bit clunky with the editing but fascinated me regardless. Must go check out the prequel. Cheers, Kovacs.

  3. This looks stunning. I too am rather curious about the first game having seen this. Looks right up my street!

  4. I would love for this game to be released on a console, played through the first and loved the scenery and the different creatures. Just slightly worried on how it would port.

    • *game, sorry ’bout the typo

      [What typo? ;) – Kovacs]

  5. Looks good, will need to see more footage of it and possible a demo to see if it is good.

  6. no, not the gamespot player, its a total fail.
its not even coming up properly, i can only see the bottom right corner.

  7. Look, nobody should be surprised. These people can’t deliver a game that will pass ANY quality control. Have you played The Witcher when it was released?
Later on they updated it to Enhanced Edition, that was actually playable, but that’s no excuse.

    • it was playable. i only had any real problems in the third chapter when there were a few frame rate issues. perhaps you had your computer on the wrong settings? i know the game was very buggy for some poeple though

  8. Looks like Dragon Age graphicy

    • this is early on remember. the graphics in the first one were fantastic
