Taking the more realistic road to modern warfare, Codemasters’ Operation Flashpoint series has traditionally attracted a more pensive, less rocket-obsessed fan-base. Described more as a “tactical shooter” rather than your typical FPS tea-bagging angst-fest, the Op Flash games (I have no idea if those in the know call them that but I’m going with it nonetheless) have dispelled the notion that war is one giant gung-ho scramble for streaks. It’s strategic, calculated, with people getting torn to shreds if they even think about crawling up behind a foe and no-scoping them in the knackers (admit it, you’ve done it.)
For Red River, yet another fictional conflict is concocted for you to drop into. Destination: Tajikstan: hotbed of political turmoil and tangos in need of your lead. Players can choose between four classes (rifleman, grenadier, scout and auto rifleman – we have no idea), with the abillity to upgrade your soldier through the purchasing of weapons and perks. Interestingly, the entire single-player campaign can be played co-operatively and, really hammering home the game’s co-op tendencies, Red River will completely forego a competitive multiplayer mode.
Operation Flashpoint has always proffered a different take on the popular war genre. It’s this alternative flavour that has us interested. Gone is the urge to run around trying to womp someone on the back of the head with your pistol just because it’s hilarious (to you, the womper, definitely not funny for the wompee), replaced with the tense reality that one wrong move on your behalf can be met with a solitary – and life-ending – enemy bullet.
Operation Flashpoint: Red River is set for a release on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year. An exact release date has yet to be confirmed.

I’m interested in this, but I hope it isn’t as buggy as Dragon rising. I would have bought it if it wasn’t as buggy as a biological warfare lab.
Amphlett
Same for me. I was looking forward to Dragon Rising until the bug laden review came out and a few mates got it, tried it and then swiftly traded it in.
gernboes
i bought dragon rising cheap off a rental shop when they took it out of theyr inventory.
i liked the first one and i think i would like dragon rising, but i couldnt get past the second mission, because the ai arent able to hold theyr positions…
(you have to defend a little village and are assigned one street to defend, but the other streets are defended by other squads who do nothing muchg else but die. and soon thereafter you get srrounded and its over…)
gernboes
its “their”, isnt it?
carson321
well it definately is not that non-existant, funny looking word you made up wit hthe r just hanging out on its own after the y!
Kovacs
Ahem … there’s no “a” in definitely.
;)
BIGAL-1992
Where’s the spelling police when you need them?
gernboes
oowww… That is what i call owned… :)
rainydays458
There should be a capital letter in I, also in the and in the final sentance.
gernboes
excuse my sparse vocabulary, but what is a sentance? ;)
And to my defense, english is not my first language :)
cc_star
“also in the and in the final sentance”
What?
i) It doesn’t make sense without punctuation.
b) You spelt sentence wrong.
3) Double and indeed triple check before correcting others.
Amphlett
‘Defence’ has a ‘c’ in it, unless you’re American, in which case you go it alone in the world by also putting your day and month back to front.
gernboes
Well, as i said in just the sentence you are talking about, english is not my first language, so obviously(!) im not american.
And as probably everybody who learns english as a foreign language, i certainly use a mix of british and american english. Although i prefer the british english and i would never ever put day and month back to front.
(But i also would never be so foolish as to use am and pm times instead of 24 hours…)
yogdog
Come on guys, cut the guy a break. He speaks better English than a few English people I know. This is supposed to be a welcome community, not one where we take the piss out of other nationalities just because they make a few mistakes because English isn’t their first language. I know if I was i’n his position I would feel offended.
BIGAL-1992
“And to my defense, english is not my first language”
Out of curiousity gernboes, what is your first language?
gernboes
@yogdog thanks for the support, but i dont really feel offended. i view it more of a little banter than somebody taking the piss out of me.
and i actually think it veeeery funny that everybody who was trying to correct me, was making mistakes of their own :D
@bigal: im austrian, we speak german here :)
(additional to that im currently learning polish and japanese :))
colossalblue
His English is a lot better than my German, which pretty much begins and ends with asking the best way to the station. I probably even do that wrong (and couldn’t understand the directions I heard in response anyway).
Here goes:
Entschuldigen, wie komme ich am besten zum bahnhoff, bitte?
There, German speakers can now spend a dozen comments mocking and correcting me :)
gernboes
ah, you got it almost right :)
But you would start with either “Entschuldigen sie” or “Entschuldigung”, formal/non-formal respectively. Bahnof is written with only one f, but i guess you wouldnt know what that changes in the pronouncation either way, and the bitte at the end of the sentence isnt exactly wrong, but sounds a bit weird.
i actually guessed you only knew how to order a beer when i read the preview of your post on the main page ;)
cc_star
I find beer is simply ‘beer’ all over the world except sometimes you have to say say ‘beer grande’ or ‘beer accompanied with a hand movement’ to show you want a large beer just in case the crazy Europeans want to give you a ladies half :/
(I do speak a lot of Spanish though, both Castilian and Catalan, but I can’t write it)
gernboes
well, if you order a beer in Austria, you normally get a “Krügerl” which is the half liter. the ladies half as you callit is a “Seidl” here. but if you get really unlucky, you get a “Pfiff” which is even smaller than a seidl ;) (and means whistle)
Kovacs
Beer in Japanese is “biiru.” Make sure you hold that “eee” sound. Biru (shortened eee sound) means “building,” and it’s unlikely you want two buildings and some pork scratchings, please (o kudasai).
fattonyxxl
I remember that mission! Took me 10 years of attempts… That mission ruined it, but the rest was awesome! Night missions following a general and sniping. Aw yes!
Moakesice
Cant wait for this, loved Dragon rising, i hope a few od the niggles are fixed and some of the graphics are improved
Pemberton_
I liked Dragon Rising, managed to platinum it too.
E8_BALL_
lets hope the friendly a.i. does what it says on the tin this time around
is so im sold
Shadow0410
I didn’t buy Dragon Rising in the end, too advice from friends on PSN and avoided it but I hope this one is better as I loved the original Flashpoint on PC.
Blayney
completed Dragon Rising, although not on the hardest setting. It was alright, if a bit bland and with thick AI.
Amphlett
Talking of ‘womping’ someone in the back of the head, one of the most bizarre trophies of recent times must BFBC2 where you’re tasked with using your drill to kill someone in multi-player.
DuffyBox
“using your drill to kill someone”
And how! To tha face, to tha face.
gazzagb
I enjoyed Dragon Rising, but I never got around to finishing it. I don’t know if it was a combination of the bugs, or just the frustration of having to restart the whole mission after dying (mainly due to the AI being dumb as f**k. The online was shockingly bad too, couldn’t connect half the time.
BigCheese
I couldn’t believe how dire the AI squad mates were in Dragon Rising, I was looking forward to it for ages and I was disappointed. It just made me feel like I was trying to win a war on my own whilst baby-sitting a bunch of retards who I hads to heal every 20 seconds. Never completed it, wasn’t very good at it at all, but it was quite fun other than the AI. Just wish I didn’t have to restart a massiv level from the start cos I wwas shot i the head rescuing my whole squad whilst single-handedly trying to hold off hordes of soliders. Looking forward to seeing the improvements in this though, I really hope they get rid of the bugs and niggles.
