First Shots Of Suda 51’s Kinect Game

Hey look everyone, it’s a non-cutesy, non-fitness, non-dancing Kinect game! Woohoo! These are the first shots from a mysterious title ‘Codename D’ which is currently being designed by legendary industry figure Suda 51. It will be published by Microsoft next year.

The game is set in an amusement park and will contain ‘strange and atrocious creatures’ which seems to indicate something along the lines of Silent Hill or Resident Evil … or maybe even Heavy Rain. Suda-san states:

It’s a no gun, no sword action game. It’s a game that will let you experience the invigorating feel that can be had because of Kinect.

That sounds a very David Cage-esque comment to make, and Suda has already expressed his admiration for the title saying he would very much like to make a title in a similar vein. The screenshots are taken from Famitsu who have described the title as follows:

Using Kinect, you become the controller and face off against enemies, clearing missions in the hopes of restoring your lost self.

Yup, still sounding like Resident Silent Heavy Kinect.

  1. There was a report on Click last weekend which said the biggest problem wiyh Kinect was it’s lack of accuracy and latency.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/9170898.stm

    • Strikes me as fairly unsurprising, the same problems plagued the eyetoy and pseye until move controllers were introduced.

      • The reporter, Marc Cieslak, did say it was well behind the accuracy of Move.

    • This guy has a real grudge against the xbox. There are no way any of the problems he are stating are even that extreme or detrimental to the gameplay whatsoever. People need to get of their high hardcore gamer horses.

So far I have played my kinect with various people, taking it around to my girlfriends university flat. Everyone was obssessed and loved it, even a few ps3 owning sceptics, especially the sports game which matey in the video seems disgusted with. No lag whatsoever and even if there was it must be literally the smallest milliseconds imaginable to not affect any game play.

    • Fairly honest review there, one of the better ones I’ve seen.

It will be interesting to see if Codename D brings anything new to the floor, or if it’s like Heavy Rain where it’s arguable wether motion controls did anything to enhance the experience. Some people loved HR with Move, others detested it – couple that with the lag and lack of fidelity in Kinect and you have to wonder how Suda 51 are going to make the experience compelling when you’re doing the Kinect flappy dance.

  2. Love how the Kinectimals tiger-cub has gone mad as a box of frogs in the first screenshot.

    • Exactly what I thought.

    • Wouldn’t you if you’d have to be controlled by Kinect?

  3. unless its so good it makes people run out and buy a Kinect, then just shelf it and bring on the shovel wear. people who will have a Kinect this time next year will have if for the casual games, and wont be interested in this IMO

  4. Seen that episode of click too, the latency will make this unplayable surely.

  5. loads of potential in this and Kinect is perfectly capable of doing what needs done as long as they tailor it well.

  6. I’d like to see how this actually ends up playing, it seems like a beat ’em up at the moment but there’s a chance it might not be.

  7. Hmmm, I think horror games could be handled well on the Kinect, providing they opt for the ‘helpless’ approach, i.e. lots of running and smashing down doors etc. Then again I thought the Kinect wasn’t going to work at all and now its one of my favourite bits of hardware around so what do I know? ;)

  8. So, this game will let you take down enemies not with guns or swords but the invigorating feeling of exercise… sounds interesting.

  9. SCARY TIGER FACE!!!

  10. wierd stuff again .
