Traditionally when we look at weekly sales charts from the land of the rising sun we expect a typical haul of RPGs as well as a gallery of other Japanese-developed games to grab the top spots. However, judging from this past week’s sales results, it appears that CoD-mania has gone global a second year on the trot, with Call of Duty: Black Ops snatching first place on the charts.
The seventh instalment of the series managed to sell a total of 129,000 copies on the PlayStation 3 (36,000 more than Modern Warfare 2) and an additional 30,000 on the Xbox 360 during launch week. Compared to the game’s record-breaking debut in the UK and the United States it may sound insignificant, though a foothold in the Japanese video game market for Activision is nothing to be scoffed at.
Black Ops took the throne from the previous week’s sales champion, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, which now stands in fifth place. Here is a full chart listing for the top 10 best-sellers:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops (PS3) – 129,000 / NEW
- Super Kasekihorida (DS) – 43,000 / NEW Super Kasekihorida
- Pokemon Black / White (DS) – 40,000 / 4,451,000
- Super Mario Collection Special Pack (Wii) – 38,000 / 566,000
- Tactics Ogre: Unmei no Wa (PSP) – 37,000 / 214,000
- World Soccer Winning Eleven 2011 (PSP) – 36,000 / NEW World Soccer Winning Eleven 2011
- Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360) – 30,000 / NEW
- Tongari Boushi to Mahou no Otana (DS) – 25,000 / 65,000
- World Soccer Winning Eleven 2011 (PS3) – 22,000 / 324,000
- Agarest Senki 2 (PS3) – 21,000 / NEW Agarest Senki 2

It will be interesting if Western FPS can make sustained in-roads into Japan, to see what the Japanese developers will add to the genre to combat it.
Klart
Indeed. It could give the very stale FPS genre a kick in the butt.

More importantly, if western games such as CoD start making an impact in Japan, it’s likely to change trends in Japanese game development. As a matter of fact it’s already been happening, though I wouldn’t say that Quantum Theory is exactly a good example to put forward…

Vanquish!
Great game is a great JP take on a 3rd-person shooter

Maybe this is why I am not a games designer, but what else can they really do with a genre thats all about guns and firing at things?
Sure they could maybe mess around with the setting a bit and create some new universe (a la Halo) but with the actual genre mechanics itself, I really don’t see any innovation there. Its point a gun and shoot. And Insomniac have practically designed every type of gun anyway…
tonycawley
You could always add in extra bits to break up the shooty bits, like black ops did with the blackbird section, atv’s in medal of honour, controlling chopper gunners, stealth sections etc. Just add variety to the gameplay, stop things being so samey throughout the whole game.

Pokemon Black and White are the best selling Pokemon games ive heard? or best first week sales … something like that :P
SuperHans
Wow, the japs sure do like their wierd rubbish don’t they!
SuperHans
let us cling together? I mean seriously, what the fuck!
Shakugan
“The Japs” Isn’t that racist?? Anyway, Resistance 2 sold very well in 2008 Japan.
jacklum
Tactics Ogre is a quality strategy RPG series. The ‘Let Us Cling Together’ part is a reference to a Queen song. It’s not really that weird at all.
Person678
How is that racist? Surely it’s no different that referring to the Scottish as Scots?
SpikeyMikey23
was tempted to list the names that would be offensive to the japanese, but no. In blackops do they use any racist terms in the vietnam missions?
djhsecondnature
@Person678 – That term is considered an ethnic slur and not fit for public use, after its hugely derogatory use during the war.
djhsecondnature
I’d like to refer you to TSA’s commenting policy, which states
“You cannot post content that … may cause offence to others on grounds of … ethnicity …”
Whilst you may not have intended it, your abbreviation of the word Japanese is considered to be an ethnic slur. So I hope it was just a simple misunderstanding.
rht992
weird seeing it sell more on the ps3 than 360
i’m pretty sure its the other way around over here

The PlayStation 3 dominates the Xbox 360 in Japan, despite how hard Microsoft have been trying to push it.
Here in the UK and in the States, it’s the other way around, though the PlayStation 3 is starting to close the gap. If Sony pull their finger out over Christmas with advertising, there is a possibility it could overtake in a year or two.
tonycawley
A year or 2 will see announcements of the next generation of consoles i reckon. Though we may not see them materialise until 2014 or so.
Quinlank
Given how barren the current 360 release schedule is compared to the utterly stuffed PS3 exclusive line up in the first half of 2011 alone it’s not unreasonable to assume it could happen sooner rather than later, especially with the current total sales gap as narrow as it is.
Awayze
PS3 has closed the gap in the UK, it’s just the US but they’ll keep on buying the Xbox as long as MS keeps making them.
PS3 can close the gap in about 2 years and overtake the Xbox 360, Xbox 360 has reached its limit where as PS3 can go a bit more.
SpikeyMikey23
who is teabags?
Teabags
Me of course ;)
