Review of the Year 2010: September

September was a month that had me torn. You see it saw both Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions and Halo: Reach released to the world, two games which had me drooling for very different reasons. In the end it was Halo that won my heart, and after attending the midnight launch and getting my head down for about 3 hours I started playing it at 8am. Until then I wasn’t aware that it was possible to do anything other than shower or drink coffee at 8am, but apparently it’s physically possible to play games then. Who knew?

So it does seem there were things that happened in September which didn’t involve playing Reach for periods of time that caused my back to hurt and my eyes to burn. For a start the PlayStation Move hit shelves across the world, unless you were in Japan. People did seem reasonably impressed with what Sony had managed to do with a web cam and high tech lollypop, they managed to deliver on the promises that were made all the way back with the announcement of the Wii. It would be so easy to make an obvious joke about Move causing a ton of aching backs as well, but it’s actually a rather pleasant experience.

Big releases aside September gave us the sad news that GAME was closing some of its stores, and featured more of the seemingly never-ending battle between Tim Schafer and EA; and Bobby Kotick and Activision. Sega locked in Sonic 4 Episode 1 got locked in for an October launch, the Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood Beta was announced, Christopher Nolan talked about an Inception title, we had the vital confirmation that David Cameron does play games, Tekken Tag Tournament was announced to the rejoicing of fighting gmae spin off fans everywhere, Duke Nukem was actually, finally, after an eternity confirmed as being completed and coming from 2K, and screens for Arkham City appeared. Finally in TSA’s continuous drive to take over the world largely through the medium of terrible puns we made the big move to a new server to cope with more of you lot turning up.

In the wider world there was the scandal of match fixing by the Pakistani Cricket Team which was pretty devastating for the sport, Apple launched the Ping social network to a resounding response of “Why?” and “Meh”, angry protestors threw various items at Tony Blair (presumably they weren’t just very enthusiastic gift givers), the Pope popped over to the UK for a visit more reminiscent of U2 or Bon Jovi touring the country, Ed Milliband took the reigns of the Labour party (sadly lowering the odds of us ever seeing Prime Minister Balls) and some very clever scientists discovered the first planet outside of our Solar System to be in the habitable zone, greatly increasing the odds of a real world alien showdown.

Weather wise apparently it was a little warmer than September really has any right to be, but also rained a lot. Sounds about right for Britain really.

  1. it was a good month

  2. Wow, Move seems like ages ago.

    • Really does. It’s funnier to think of all the games we woulda had by now if it wasn’t for delays.

      • i’ll get my hands on “move”!!

  3. I think move was the main thing for me in September – I had pre-ordered it as soon as the option became available, though clearly from the wrong place as my starter pack arrived days after it was supposed to. Whilst it is a shame that there still aren’t many titles available for the move, some of the stuff that is out there (RE5 and Heavy Rain for example) is fantastic and the potential for the control system is great.

  4. September was meh I can’t remember what game I had bought, didn’t really bother with Move until December

  5. The only game i bought in September was Dead Rising 2 and my brother bought F1 2010. The only other interesting thing that happened that month that i can remember is that a paedophile was supposedly seen by our school but it turned out to be a man walking his dog.
