Review of the Year 2010: December

You would think that December would be the easiest month to look back on, since we’re still living it. In reality, it’s quite difficult. Barely any games have been released and other than the student protests there hasn’t been much news.

Of course, weather wise, December is a goldmine. It snowed in the UK. Proper snow, like the stuff that doesn’t melt as soon as it hits the ground. This dominated the news under various guises.

From the traditional winter “Travel Chaos” stories to the desperate clawing of reporters to find someone, somewhere to say something negative about how the UK – as a nation – can’t cope with the weather. It was unlucky for them that there seemed to be a resolute determination among the people in train queues and airport lounges to not be too negative about it. Of course there were travel issues and of course people got annoyed but on the whole we all just put up with. Hard to scratch a shocking news story out of that, isn’t it?

In other news, supporters of Wikileaks brought down several websites (including Visa and Mastercard) for a brief time to show support for the founder of the whistleblowing website, Julian Assange who may or may not have sexually assaulted a Swedish woman.

Student protests got a bit out of hand with allegations of police heavy-handedness and iconic photographs of a fool defacing the cenotaph. Not a lot of anything else happened. Of course, I’m writing this just before Christmas so if there’s another Christmas day pants bomber or a tragedy like the boxing day tsunami of 2004 I’ll look pretty silly.

As for games releases… well, we got Donkey Kong Country Returns and the Sly Collection at the beginning of the month and then a handful of downloadable titles and some huge names for 2011 released demos (Mass Effect 2 PS3, Dead Space 2, LittleBigPlanet 2!). December is quiet though, publishers are too busy fighting with each other in the retail space to bother with new releases.

So there you have it. It’s been chilly out, right?

Phew, that’s a wrap then. Happy New Year everyone, here’s to a great 2011!

  1. It was a good month

    • Haha just trying to beat that one guy to the punch. December was crazy, went from +5 to -40 on the thermometer in my town. We are renowned for having the most extreme weather in Canada here but we were lucky enough to not be crippled by feet of snow. Also Christmas! Hooray!

  2. Travel Chaos!!!111

I even skidded a bit once.

    • Oh no snow, roads abit clogged, I know I’ll walk!!!

    • Good opportunities for a cheeky handbrake turn

      • I found mini roundabouts the best for cheeky little donouts when I was brave enought to venture out with the RX8!

    • Time for some new boxers then. *chuckles*

  3. How may times have we looked at snow scenes in movies and xmas cards and wished we could have a white xmas…. never again! lol
I had a friend staying for xmas only to end up with no running water and no heating due to the freezing conditions. Luckily I have an open fireplace and we weren’t that interested in drinking water anyway! ;)

A Very Happy New Year to all !
