Review of the Year 2010: October

So here we are, October and it’s officially time for games to be released. Of course that’s not all that fair any more, publishers are starting to spread things out a little bit more now. Nevertheless October contained a wealth of gaming goodness this year with some of the big boys finally putting out their latest iteration along with a few new titles thrown in for good measure.

Football bookended the month with FIFA 11 getting everything off to a good start on the 1st, and PES 2011 and Football Manager 2011 wrapping things up at the end of the month. The sports gaming continued with the releases of NBA 2K11, with NBA Jam adding a more arcade slant to the genre. If you wanted some less traditional sports then Shaun White Skateboarding was also released, along with Rapala Pro Bass Fishing 2010 for any anglers out there (no I’d never heard of it before either). If you wanted some sports entertainment then the rather excellent WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011 delivered it in spades.

October also gave us some action adventure goodness with the reboot of Castlevania in the form of Lord of Shadows and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. If you wanted to go even more sci-fi than Enslaved then Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 probably made it’s way into your hands at some point. Moving from lightsabers to guns Vanquished kept the sci-fi going, before Medal of Honor brought us all crashing back to earth with gritty realism.

Of course if your tastes lie more in the rhythm gaming direction you were spoilt for choice with the release of Just Dance 2, Rock Band 3 and DJ Hero 2 coming in quick succession. Finally if RPGs with huge worlds are what you want then you had Fallout: New Vegas and Fable 3 to chose between.

Outside of gaming October gave us the announcement of this year’s Noble Prize winners, Druidry was recognised as a religion in the UK, Germany celebrated 20 years of reunification, and 2010 Common Wealth games kicked off. I’m not saying those things are really related, it’s just convenient to list them together. In sad news Sir Norman Wisdom passed on, ending a life time of bringing laughter to the world. In happier news Obama announced that he was going to try to bring an end to the policy of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in the US millitary, and the Chilean miners were rescued.

And finally the weather. It seem October was pretty average for a British October (if it was average for an Australian October that’d be far more disturbing).

  1. it was a good month

    • It’s been a good week for deja vu ;)

  2. Vanquish all the way for me, what a fantastic shooter if a tad short.

  3. Vanquish was awesome. Due to no co op or online didnt really offer replayability although should v2 appear with co op it would be epic. If you haven’t played vanquish give it a go. Its a blast. Just some wholesome arcade style shooting! Loads of fun!

    • I 2nd this view and I don’t typically like arcadey East-meets-West sci-fi shoot-em-ups (that should be an official genre right there!) – but I love Vanquish. In an alpha-male type of way of course.

  4. F1 2010 and PES 11 were okay but a bit flawed. Phantasy Star Portable 2 was probably a great purchase one of the best RPGs for PSP and it was £19.99 which was wonderful!. I’d say it would’ve been better going for the PSP alternative than buying a full price multi-plat title.

October was a bit disappointing… price-wise and well Vanquish and Enslaved.. didn’t seem worthy around £39.99 and defo Fallout: New Vegas too buggy apparently.
