In the market for a hideously overpriced gaming peripheral? Then you’ve come to the right place, as Sony has revealed the second officially licensed Gran Turismo 5 wheel, the Thrustmaster T500 RS – and its £449.99 price tag.
“The goal that I set for the Thrustmaster team was to design for me the most precise wheel ever developed, without any latency – to accurately reproduce the sensations of GT5, and let users truly feel the emotions experienced by drivers on real racing circuits,” says Gran Turismo head honcho Kazunori Yamauchi.
The post on the PlayStation Blog highlights the wheel and pedal kit’s “rugged, almost all-metal design”, “precision engineered steering, acceleration and braking inputs”, and the £449.99 cost of the whole thing. Oh wait, did I already mention that?
For what it’s worth, this is probably the definitive racing wheel you could be playing GT5 with, but at £449.99 (oh, I said it again), only the most die-hard enthusiasts are going to be buying a fake steering wheel for more than it costs to get a used car. The wheel may give you excellent feedback etc. but without a shifter and at that price, I can’t see it selling well.

It has the gearshift paddles under the wheel which I think most people prefer anyway. I have used those rather than the the stick on my DFGT.
Even with a stick though, that’s nearly the price of two consoles, so only really for the totally dedicated racer. Lovely bit of kit though.

Very highly priced. Would I buy one given the money and space, probably not, seeing as to my knowledge it is incompatible as yet with anything other than GT5, and there are simply not enough events in GT5 for me to justify buying one. (All hypothetical of course, I do not have this kind of cash lying around, for you see I am but a poor student)

The official xbox 360 steering wheel is fantastic when used with forza 3 and is at a decent price.
