Geohot Releases FW 3.55 PS3 Jailbreak

Geohot, the man responsible for the leaking of the PS3’s super secret security keys, has released what appears to be a ‘jailbreak’ for Firmware 3.55 PlayStation 3s.

It’s unclear what this jailbreak does at present, Geohot himself says that pirates shouldn’t waste their time, and we wouldn’t recommend anyone installs the jailbreak as the consequences are unknown.

It does appear to run from a USB stick, though, marking this release out from any previous ones, and only works on FW 3.55 with no previous homebrews working at this moment.

Update: apparently the Jailbreak patches the firmware to allow installation of ‘signed apps’, of which there is currently only one: Geohot’s own ‘hello world’.

TheSixthAxis does not condone piracy and does not recommend the modification of your console – doing so is against the Terms of Use of the console and is possibly illegal.

  1. After various backup managers which enable the copying of games the next highest reason people will have for cracking or running custom firmware on their machines is more features like jailbroken iPhones.

Sony will need to offer more features to prevent people from feeling the need to experiment, top requests are always music visualisers, better browser, more codecs supported, ability to customise the XMB (hide Home, delete 0% games from Trophy lists etc)

If someones providing stuff that people want, people will

Making it inconvenient through higher frequency of security updates solves nothing, it just delays the inevitable and encourages people hacking activities to go to lower & lower levels in the system where they can’t be patched.

    • That is true! Never thought of that, if Sony do want we want, there is no need to hack

  2. I’m totally against piracy, but i’d love some new features added to the ps3, like MKV support, NTFS partition support, savegames backup (even protected ones), full installation for “every game”(GT5 takes ages to load) and some other cool stuff.
If someone manages to release a CFW with these features then i’ll be tempted to grab and try it.

  3. I am glad for the Jailbreak. Now I can play old game system games which is no loss for them anyways since they are way outdated systems and I haven’t seen but only 2 or 3 games that I like anyways for the PS3 so I bought them so that isn’t any loss there since I will buy the ones I like.

I hate Sony anyways since they’re crappy drive went out on my PS3 and I found out that the drive is faulty all the way and Sony will not replace it so Hell with them. They deserve to have they’re system hacked.
