Famitsu Reveal Top 100 Selling Games Of 2010

Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has revealed the top 100 selling video games in 2010, along with the hardware numbers, making a comprehensive set of figures for the Japanese market.

The biggest selling game of last year?  Pokemon Black / White on the DS, shifting just shy of five million copies in total. 2nd place goes to Monster Hunter Portable 3rd on the PSP with nearly three and a half million units sold, then the Wii’s New Super Mario Bros. with one and a half million.

The first PS3 game is Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage selling 553,229 copies in 18th place, with Gran Turismo 5 one place behind moving 545,127 copies.

The best selling Xbox 360 game in Japan was the 93rd place Monster Hunter Frontier Online with 123,192 units sold.

Hardware-wise, it’s a familiar story.  The Nintendo DS sold 2,963,709 copies (so it’s now at 32 million total), the PSP 2,890,476 (16.2 million total) and the Wii 1,728,293 (11.2 million total).  The PS3 moved 1,558,480 (six million total), the 360 208,790 (1.4 million total) and the PS2, still going ‘strong’, sold 92,149, making that nearly 22 million PS2s sold to date.

  1. outsold almost 1:6, take that Xbox fans from the figure before ;~) haha just kidding, nice to see the top games coming from portable consoles and Pokemon still going strong!!

  2. With PS2 still being sold in those figures, SONY are in no hurry to patch the PS3’s FW so it can emulate PS2 games…

  3. “The best selling Xbox 360 game in Japan was the 93rd place Monster Hunter Frontier Online with 123,192 units sold.”

    When was this released?

  4. No matter what you say, PokeMon is still a worldwide phenomenon like it was 13 years ago! Expect the same over here in March! Its hot on the heels of Mario as the biggest selling games franchise!

  5. Adding all the figures together, this appears to give Sony the overall lead through 2010 between PS3 and 360 sales. I was going off some wrong Japanese numbers before, that made it look like this was just a 1 million lead, but it seems to now be more like a 5 million console lead. From that though, I have to make exceptions and cut it by half, allowing for the potential for more missed consoles that MS didn’t really report, or whatever.

Even so, Sony appears to have been making up the deficit to the 360, and if it hadn’t been for the 360S, I believe they could almost be level pegging… Most impressive.

    • oh ignore that brain melting idiocy. I read it as 6 mil and 1.5 mil total sold for the year, not total sold in lifetime.

So ignore that, 2010 was an overall tie between the PS3 and 360.

  6. Man that Fist of the North star demo was one of the strangest games I think I have ever tried, though I can see exactly why the Japanese love it so much.

    • I liked it, got to get me a copy of the game when it’s cheap, the anime it was based on is a classic too! Even if you watch it just for the animated walking you’ve got to see it!

  7. Wow, the 2 highest sellers are both handheld games, with Sony and MS lagging behind at 18th and 93rd! Their market could not be more different to ours.

    • sony don’t make the psp to put them in second? news to me :\

  8. I would have thought GT5 would have sold more than 545,127 copies.
