MX vs ATV To Offer Alternative Ways To Pay

MX vs. ATV: Alive, the next game in the surprisingly popular franchise (over 10 million sales, whodathunk?) will be released at the bargain price point of $39.99 (around £25). The reason for this price is that THQ are to trial a new method of pay-to-play.

The on-disc version of the game will be a full functioning title, however, it will be backed by an “unprecedented digital content distribution strategy” when the game launches. Described as an “a la carte” method of digital content distribution, it will allow players to pay for only what they want to play.

No details have been released as to what content is on disc and what will be on the ‘a la carte’ menu. It’s an interesting idea and a sure-fire way for THQ to gain extra revenue from pre-owned copies of the game but what do you think of this new way to pay?

  1. Ah, so like MotorStorm 1 then? Nothing on the disk and everything as DLC ;)

In all honesty though, this is an interesting experiment, and I’d like to see it succeed, just because it means cheaper – and likely better selling – games.

  2. Waiting for the inevitable ‘Ultimate’ edition a year later…

  3. Intriguing way to go about things. I hope it does well because theoretically, you’ll be able to tailor the game more to your taste without paying for chaff you might never use and also the games should hit the shelves quicker, less time for a development hell period.
Then there’s the whole, one unsuccessful game and a development house goes under thing which, depressingly seems to be happening more and more often. I wish them well.

  4. isn’t this exactly what gt5 was rumoured to be like and got slagged off for?

i know exactly what this is about, it’s about putting as little of the game as possible on the disc, giving the user as little value in their purchase as possible.

they basically want to make the game worthless to anybody but the original buyer.

i just wish i was interested in the game so my refusal to buy it on the grounds of thq being greedy douchebags would have some meaning, in depriving them of a sale, but i wasn’t likely to buy it anyway.

why don’t they just do some kind of steam to totalitarian drm bull so everybody can seem them for the greedy slime they are.

  5. hopefully we’re on the route to buying the disc with all the content on for £5, then £20 pound payable straight to the publisher/devs

  6. i enjoyed reflex and played quite a lot of the game, but i dont fully understand whats they r doing?

  7. not keen on this idea.
