I Am Alive Not a Download Title, Just a Joke

Looks like those hilarious French funny-men over at JeuxVideo were pulling our leg all along when they claimed Ubisoft’s disaster (as in event, not quality) game would not be getting a retail outing, favouring the digital distribution model instead.

Confirming on their site today, the guys have smirked and guffawed at the rest of us taking the bait, especially considering the story was obviously a giant gag. That said, Jade Raymond, Head of Ubisoft Toronto, did get wind of the story and was allegedly “taken aback.” The guys are sorry for this part, stating:

Although our responsibility in this story is zero, we still want to apologise for the misunderstanding arisen from this innocent trait of humor.

We did state in the original article that we couldn’t confirm the veracity of the story but, regardless, good one guys, you got us. The lesson learned here? We should have paid more attention in French class. Oh, and don’t believe everything you read/hear on JeuxVideo!

  1. b-b-but its not even april yet

  2. *slow clap.

  3. The French surrendered their humor a long time ago…

  4. Gee, good one guys. That sure was… humourous…

  5. hilarious…

goes to show why there aren’t that many good (if any) french comedians in the world, if that’s what they think is funny.

although, they did get a few articles out of it, so I guess it worked out in the end.

  6. While not necessarily winning any fans for their comedy, am I alone in thinking this has worked as an advertising excercise for Ubisoft?
If there is a trailer or solid details released soon then surely more people will be paying more attention to the game.

    • it will certainly raise awareness for the title but might harm expectations and confuse the brand when they start trying to market it themselves.
Ultimately, I imagine Ubi are a bit annoyed about this and it will no doubt (rightfully, in my opinion) harm JeuxVideo’s reliability if they ever decide to stop making dubious comedy videos and start trying to report on the games industry again.

    • I agree with CB. From my (non-French speaking) understanding of the piece, the tone of the report was that “The game is useless, they’re not even going to bother releasing it at retail.”

That’s not going to win them any friends over at Ubisoft.

      • Ah. I didn’t realise the piece was in that particular context. It certainly makes a lot more sense now and JeuxVideo will probably be lucky to be left with nothing more than just red faces as far as Ubisoft are concerned. Bizarre.

  7. Ah well – whats done is done.

  8. May I direct everyone’s attention to my comment on the original post – http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2011/02/01/i-am-alive-now-a-digital-download-title/comment-page-2/#comment-289187

    *smug mode engaged*

  9. Since you don’t seem to understand the post on Jeuxvideo.fr I will try to explain it to you guys.
In the video, the guy on his chair says two things : one joke (obvious by the way) and one fact.

“I went on a date with Jade Raymond and she told me […]” => FALSE. He never talked with Jade Raymond about I am Alive AND she never ever dated him (or did she ? NO she didn’t !).

“[…] I am Alive will be a Download Title (PSN & XBLA).” => PRETTY TRUE. The guy doesn’t want to say where he got the info but that’s no bullshit.

    Take care.

  10. is the french version of april fool’s in february or something?
