Activision Claim Best Selling PS3 Game, Ever

Activision, bouyant about today’s launch of the first map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops dubbed First Strike, has claimed that the core game is the “best-selling PlayStation 3 title ever” as part of a press release.

Citing NPD, ChartTrack and GfK as the sources, the publisher’s claims aren’t hard to believe.

“The First Strike map pack significantly expands the intense experience for the millions of fans enjoying Call of Duty: Black Ops on the PlayStation 3 every day,” said Mark Lamia, Studio Head, Treyarch.

“Across each of First Strike’s multiplayer maps and the newest Zombie level, we have created unique experiences that will appeal to everyone playing online in the PSN Call of Duty community around the world.”

  1. Why??? Some things in life I just can’t get my head around. I guess its like music. There is some great bands out there, then you get people like Cheryl Cole top the charts. She should be seen and not heard! :)

  2. Yes it has sold loads, and I was playing again a minuite ago but it is no way the best. Not even close.
They have marketed this amzingly well, as that’s what caused me to buy it, but the final product needs a lot of fixing.
New Zombie map looks good (Although stupidly complex) but i won’t be spending £12 on one zombie map to play a few times…

  3. So over 7 million copies sold then to be beating GT5 I would say- rather interesting that Kotick seem to see the PS3 market as irrelevant

  4. Not really surprising, but I played the demo yesterday and (besides the repel-through-the-window bit) it was pretty average.

  5. im surprised that a fairly standard FPS is the best selling game, i understand having a massiv PR and Marketing juggernaut behind it helps but all i experienced when playing it was “yeah…..not bad”.
i do hope at the end of this generation we can look back and see a game with a certain modicum of originality and innovation sitting at the the top of the PS3/360 sales lists (ha!) :D

  6. I borrowed it from my brother’s friend for a while. The campaign is clever, I’ll give them that, but the multiplayer has issues. I though CoD was known for its solid multiplayer experience? This is lacking a major component – solidity.

  7. I would like to have this backed up with the actual sales figures if possible! Not that I don’t believe them – much, but I would still like to see the figures and how it amtches up to other games!

    • *matches* my cr*p typing strikes again today!

  8. Well, congratulations to them, they somehow manage to sell an infinite amount of games, even though 50% of people with it seem to claim it’s awful. That 50% being the PS3 fan-base. It’s impressive, if not a little bewildering. I haven’t bought one since Call of Duty 4, as it is the only one I ever enjoyed in any way.

  9. Where is the evidence? If CODBO is the best selling ps3 game then does that mean it is also the fastest game to get traded in?

I think Metal gear Solid 4 and Uncharted 2 hold the title. I shall now claim that TSA is the biggest and fastest growing site on the interenet without backing it up. see you are not the only one who can make claims without backing it up.

    • I don’t think a big corporation would outright lie, the ramifications would far outweigh any short-term benefits a few headlines would give them and all the negative comments that come with any Acti story.

It’s safe to assume that BlOps has outsold GT5, but by how much is purely their commercial data, we’ll find out by in Activision’s end of year financials.

  10. not surprised really, dont expect the next COD to sell as well though.

    • if mw3 was being made only by iw, i would gamble & say definitely a bigger seller, as people will now realise they’ll get an a decent cod. with 3 devs in the mix, may cause people to be hesitant.
only blessing atm is treyarch arn’t one of them.
bops without 0bugs, still sounds, looks awful & plays even worse. i know treyarch can do gameplay, try w@w, they need to pull their finger out, to sort sound & graphics. hats my opion, some people hear obliviously like that & respect that & am happy for fellow gamers who do.
never been my intention to cause friction on this topic, only debate. never again will i make a negative comment re ops.
      peace :)
