CoD To Continue Using The Same Engine?

Ever since the launch of Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty games have been using the same engine, modified for each new version. That won’t be changing in the immediate future according to Infinity Ward figurehead, Robert Bowling. In a recent tweet, a fan stated that CoD needed a new engine, built from the ground up. This was Bowling’s reply:

“That would be counter productive. An engine takes years and years to develop and get right.”

I don’t want to take his words out of context so to be clear, he doesn’t actually say they’re not in the process of building a new one for the future but based on this quote, I think it’s safe to say that the next Infinity Ward-related Call of Duty project will be running on good ole’ Bessy. Tried, true and old, but reliable.

  1. It sounds like they have no plans to build a new engine. Another franchise being run into the ground.

  2. Did the engine not have anything to do with West & Zampella? I hope respawn are working on a new engine =D

  3. The big thing with CoD is the 60 frames per second and it works on all platforms easily. Why change a tried and tested platform?

Be interesting to see how the engine develops on Sniper Ghost Warrior game. Version 5 is being used for Dead Island, might the way away from id’s engine.

    • Because we’re not in an industry where “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is acceptable. Companies and developers should always be pushing the boundaries, not resting on the cash mountain.

      • It’s perfectly acceptable. If you disregard 3D engines, the best platform games have used the same engine almost since inception. Racing games only make subtle changes to an engine through development.

In 3D terms. Unreal works. Another engine that is available for development that works on all platforms that isn’t Frostbite and that IW/Treyarch can use is probably Chrome. DICE can rely on their development on Frostbite will pay when Battlefield 3 is released on PC and will sell millions and recoup there costs. IW/Treyarch can’t, if they made a new engine for World at War they would have lost on it.

      • Looking at the 30fps max of other franchises, they are pushing the boundaries in some regards – perhaps once this topsy-turvey year for them is out the way, they’ll look at upping the resolution, although even that is largely secondary to the kind of effects they’re already doing, which coupled with the double framerate means they’re not really doing anything worthy of criticism

  4. if people keep buying what is more or less the same game, by the squintillion, why bother innovating?

  5. Cannot believe they are using the same engine again? Still I don’t care, not buying it anyway. Buggy to hell and wide open for hackers, let the guilable buy in.

  6. Killzone, Crysis, Frost Bite – all these engines leave COD behind. That new Battlefield 3 gameplay video, although a PC build – looks like a movie, absolutley astounding.

  7. Sounds very lazy to me. I think BFBC2 with its Frostbite engine is already a step ahead of COD. When COD fanatics I know actually give BFBC2 a chance they usually realise the way of the tiger and stick with BFBC2 so when BF3 is released and a COD loving BF virgin see’s it I think their head will explode.

  8. God forbid if they don’t release a COD game every year due to them building a new engine. The engine will start showing it’s age soon and could lead to a lot of bug.Betheseda used the same engine for 4-5 years and that lead to some very buggy games. So basically they have said”we can’t be arsed to work on a new engine so we will just push out the same thing every year with a few minor tweaks.”
Most companies switch engines after a few games to avoid using an outdated peice of software and to improve their game. You can only mod an engine so many times before it becomes unuseable.

  9. There’s no doubt the next installment will sell ridiculous amounts but I’ll be interested to see if sales start to decline compared to the previous figures. Maybe people are beginning to realize there are better games out there as for the first couple of days BlackOps was released nearly everyone on my friends list were playing it… Bout 3 days later only 1 person and he’s my mates son who’s only 8, everyone else seemed to revert back to the game they were previously playing.

    • I haven’t bothered playing it since I platinumed it. But kept playing MW2 for months, and would still be playing it if I knew I could get into a fair unhacked match!

  10. The engine is ID Tech 4 anyway – it might be getting long in the tooth as it’s been around since the 360’s launch but it’s still better than a lot of other stuff out there. With ID Tech 5 being exclusive to Bethesda, they’ll have to look elsewhere.

I’m sure Activision can afford the $2m license to use CryEngine 3 if they needed to…

    • now that i`d like to see :D
