PS3’s Worldwide Active Install Base Passes 360’s.

Although the Wii’s still way out in front, the battle – such as it is – between the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 continues to fuel playground squabbles and internet bandwidth.

According to a new report from strategic analysts Strategy Analytics (and reported by Gamasutra) the PS3 has, at least in terms of its ‘active install base’, overtaken Microsoft’s year and a bit head start with the 360.

Despite the boost Kinect undoubtably gave the 360 over Christmas, its slow performance outside the US continues to hold it back, with Strategy Analytics calling this “a drag on its global performance.”

“Global demand for Sony’s PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years,” said the company, suggesting that Microsoft should continue to “innovate” with Kinect, which “will become increasingly relevant in the smart home era.”

You want figures?  How about 75.5 million for the Wii, 43.4 million for the PS3 and 42.9 million for the Xbox 360.  Take those to the yard.

  1. Woah, the Wii is almost what the PS3’s and 360’s are combined! Although how can anyone make sure those figures are accurate? I have a Wii, although it’s certainly not active, only play Mario Kart on it once in a while.

  2. wow cool, knew it would happen at some point!

  3. Are these units sold or units actually being used? If it’s the latter, I don’t see why everyone’s saying “We knew it would happen”. If it’s the former, it smells of pre-April Fools.

  4. Thing is, most of the time the numbers we see are from the US only. Now we al know that the 360 outsells the PS3 in the US quite easily so we always get to see numbers in which the 360 is ahead. I like seeing the worldwide numbers as the PS3 is doing better in both Europe and Japan.

  5. Pre April fools?

PS3 would have eventually overtook the 360 outside the US.

  6. What is meant by “active”?? Used daily/weekly/monthly??

I think that a lot of wii’s are sat gathering dust as mentioned above.

    GOOOOOOOOOD!!! ;-D + The ‘Wii’ next… ;-P

+ Bring on a $199 + £199 + 199euro PS3 near Christmas & watch the PS3 fly out the shops;) The Poor haters on the internet must be gutted by this News(you know all those fools on n4g.com, i.e the people who run the side & the mods & the M$ members/fans) How can they(M$ fans)have 99% of the internet on their side & still fail to stop the PS3 from overtaking the xBox 360??? CLASSIC STUFF!!! ;-D

  8. how exactly do they figure out how many active systems there are?
i would expect a higher percentage of ps3s to be active than 360s but how are they getting the figure?

mind you, it doesn’t really make much difference to me, these numbers don’t change whether i’m going to enjoy a game or not, so who really cares, other than ms and sony?
