I think it’s virtually impossible to overstate how big of a deal the PSN outage has become. However, the thing that is still up for debate is how badly this will hurt Sony in the long run, as well as how much their competitors will gain from it.
Everyone’s favorite analyst, Michael Pachter, has thrown his two cents in to the discussion now, claiming that he doesn’t think the Xbox brand is going to grow because of the Sony’s current struggles.
“Once the network is back up and secure, and once people calm down and realize they didn’t lose anything, the damage will largely be repaired. There are a few people who undoubtedly threw their PS3s in the trash, and likely a few thousand who bought an Xbox 360 over a PS3 due to the PSN outage, but I can’t envision this number being more than a rounding error.”
As much as I hate to do it, I actually have to agree with PachMan® on this one. I just don’t think there’s that many gamers out there that care so much about online gaming that they’re willing to rush out and buy a new console at the drop of 3 weeks worth of hats. As for those that do care that much, they likely already owned both consoles to begin with.
So there. You have that info. Do with it what you will.

I think Steam may have done better, but then Steam is not in competition with SONY anyway, (Portal 2 for example). And I dare say after Microsoft bought out the patent for Skype, I can possibly see Steam and Sony working together in the future to give us cross game chat. (Which thanks to Microsoft I don’t think is possible atm now)

I’ve been a Playstation gamer since around ’97 and I can’t see that changing anytime soon.
That and the fact that I purchased a new PS3 5 days before the outage :P

I think you’re right. A guy at work I was chatting to actually told me he doesn’t like playing games offline(!) as he only really enjoys competing with real people. While that made me incredibly depressed for the great stories and gameplay of things like Uncharted and RDR, the fact that he still hadn’t jumped ship for an Xbox says a lot. He’s certainly wealthy enough (he has the Thrustmaster T500 wheel and pedals!)

I just found out this morning that £1600 came out my account. Fraud, PSN no more for me. Thats definitely me never using my credit card details with Sony again. What a shame

Can you prove it because of PSN? Do you know that for sure. Do you only use this card with PSN? Have you told Sony. Not being narky with you but it could be a raft of possibilities leading to your card being mis-used.
Mine got done last year for 5k at an airport so I feel for you, your stomach churns when you see it. I couldn’t pin it on any one place where it could have leaked from though, it was a credit card I had used online and in shops.

That’s a knee jerk reaction. If you use your credit card online at all, it is likely to happen at some point. Companies that have been hacked are usually the safest places to use your card in future.

The PSN beeing down is as big as if the existence of God was scientifically proven, JC and Elvis returning but converting to Buddhism because it’s cooler, and the USS Enterprise arriving in orbit. All on the same day.
