Rovio have announced that their Angry Birds games have been downloaded in total over 200 million times.
That’s over all platforms with all the different versions of Angry Birds: the original, Seasons and Rio.
So, it looks like small downloadable games really are the way forward, but we have to bear in mind that this will include the Lite versions of the games and the free Chrome Web Store version, which had over 6 million downloads in a week – and we know that all downloads do not equate to sales.
Still, that’s an impressive figure.
Rovio have also announced that the Angry Birds merchandise has been selling well, with over 3 million units sold globally. There really are some hardcore Angry Birds fans out there, aren’t there?

I’m a bit saddened by the COD mentality creeping in. Sure, Angry Birds isn’t for everyone but please understand that tremendous sales are there for a reason. It’s a great game. It just might not be for you… or you… or you. But for 80% of people (random figure pulled from my magic bum) it’s great fun. Slamming into it with negativity does nothing. It’s been a phenomenal success and huge kudos to Rovio.
For me, the real winner here is that such a success can come from a tiny initial investment, financially, when compared to some PSN games and definitely the larger disc-based brethren. It shows us that games companies can start of with the smallest expenditure but still turn into something great.
Fingers crossed we’ll see another twenty Rovios in the coming years and then one of them will expand to the point of delivering home console (and disc-based) sized games.
Good on them.

Magic bum?
I bet that’s a crowd pleaser.

Sadly, it’s magnetic and gets me into trouble at airports. Pros and cons, fella. Pros and cons.

Actually I think of it in a similar way to COD. It’s not my favourite game but after everyone went on about it, I tried it and did quite enjoy it. I don’t play it so much any more but still dip in and out.
Very much like COD really.

200 million is a lot but it’s kind of like saying that Primark have sold 200 million t-shirts, they’re damn cheap and aimed at the widest possible market segment.

Of and fair play to them, they nailed exactly what mobile gaming should be about.

i’ve got the minis version and also there’s a free version if you use the chrome browser.
so i guess that counts me for two.

Amazing! That’s got to make those boys multi-millionaires. Good work! Developers need to take note.

Slightly embarrassed here, originally tried it on ipod and couldn’t get past first few levels. Tried it recently on ipad and i ..er.. noticed that you can interact to boost/split the birds as they are flung…i never noticed that before but I’m doing much better now lol. :\

That is embarrassing. What ever you do, don’t go on a popular gaming website and admit that in front of everyone

To be honest, bundling all the different versions into the same sales figure is a bit of a cheat. You wouldn’t say CoD has sold x million copies by counting all the games in the series.
I know Angry Birds games are all based on the same engine but Rio is as different to ‘regular’ Angry Birds as MW is to MW2 for example

I only downloaded it to see what all the fuss was about. It’s ok for killing time I guess at work, but I’ve yet to feel the need to pick it up and play it at home, where I have PS3/PSP/DS handy.
